I think they base that on the reference to the final week (7 years) of the 70 weeks (490 years) mentioned in Daniel chapter 9. The first 69 weeks have lapsed (7 weeks = 49 years and 62 weeks = 434 years, after which time Messiah Jesus was "cut off"; that is died)
Actually Revelation mentions Antichrist as having power to act for 42 months (3 and 1/2 years) in Revelation 13:5 (see also Revelation 11:2)

Yeah, thanks for narrowing it down there, SDW.
I don't think the Book of Revelations speaks of the tribulation period being 7 years (but I'm not completely sure). I do know that there are plenty of other prophetic books of the bible that also talk about the great tribulation and the 7 years part might be within one of those books (my guess is within the last few chapters of Daniel). As for the Great Tribulation, that period is spoken of in Revelations chapter 7 and Matthew chapter 24 to name a couple.

Great question. The Bible never specifically mentions a 7 year tribulation. You have to manipulate the "70 weeks" prophecy in the Book of Daniel and read into parts of Revelation. Basically you have to make the Bible say what it doesn't really say.

Many of you on on the right Track with Daniel...70 weeks of years or 490 years....Christ was born in the last years of Daniels Prophecy....he died with just 3 and 1/2 years left....
so the first 3 1/2 are still to go ...many people refer to it as the Prophetic Stopwatch...with the Crucifixion being when god clicked the stopwatch....it would not start again till the Rebuilding of the temple and a return of sacrificial worship....according to scripture(well popular interpretation of it )
Here is a link to another timeline
http://home.att.net/~jrd/Daniels_70_Weeks.pdf
there are several ideas about where everything falls....
None of them based on a whole lot more than scaring people half to death to keep in close to god
use a search engine with ...Daniel 70 weeks .... or something of the like.....I think everyone on the planet has thier own timeline...and worse interpretaion of what all we have watiing for us and when..some even say its all already happened/..blah blah blah

Chapters 4-22--that's kinda the theme of the whole book.
At least I cut out three chapters for you, if it helps.
Seriously, it's an interpretation based on the repeated symbolic use of the number 7. The 7 trumpets, seals, bowls, etc... are supposed to each represent one year according to some. We have no idea how long the tribulation is supposed to last; some believe that it started when Jesus ascended into heaven.

interior the e book of Revelation, Jesus is chatting with the church of Philadelphia, the committed church. He says, in view which you have saved my word, i'll maintain you from the arrival tribulation which would be upon the earth. it rather is to no longer be perplexed with the tribulation Jesus reported we might all go through in life, which skill in basic terms troubling circumstances, which come to all persons contained in direction of time. i've got faith those committed Christians, who've certainly saved the word of God, are counted between this "committed church" and could no longer see the tribulation era. because of the fact the bible additionally says we as believers are "no longer appointed unto wrath" and the tribulation is God's wrath poured upon a Christ rejecting international, it is the 2nd reason i've got faith Christians won't see the tribulation. I even have faith we could desire to constantly no longer argue among ourselves over the timing. i'm content to be responsive to Jesus will come while He does.

The entire concept of rapture and all is from dispensationalism which is one guys twisted version of snagging verses from various books of the bible into what HE considered cohesive story (truly a jumble of nonsense) that - oddly - fundamentalists have bought hook line and sinker since he made it up! I find it quite amusing that Christians scream the bible is the word of god as it's written but they buy this wacko guys idea as if god wrote it! Crazy!
