Royal Canin is not my first choice in food, but it's not the worst food out there. Use the feeding guidelines on the back of the bag, and adjust if he seems over or under weight. Your schedule of 3 feedings a day is great.

Look into some of these foods:
Innova
Wellness
California Natural
Natures Variety
Nutrisource
Chicken Soup
Canidae
Go! Natural
Natural Blends (by royal canin)
Natural Balance
Oven Baked Tradition

Avoid foods with corn, wheat, soy, or by-products. This link will help

Six cups a day might be a little excessive, but I've never used that particular brand of food, so I'm not sure. Just follow the guideline amount on the food, maybe a little extra if necessary. And if it makes you feel any better, my GSD took forever to fill out. I kept asking the vet if she was underweight and she was a little, by maybe 3 lbs, but she ate plenty. She was just growing so fast and constantly playing and most pups are like that. If you're really concerned though, check with the vet to make sure he's not underweight.

He sounds like he's just about perfect to me.It's good that you can feel his ribs ,but not see them, because a lean pup is a healthy pup, especially in a breed prone to joint disorders. From what I've heard,Royal Canin is a good food.

Your dog food bag should have a feeding guide on it. My German Shepherd's were thin like that when pups. Shepherds are considered puppies until 2 years old. According to Beneful Adult dog food, growing pups should be allowed to eat all they want through out the day.

You feed him too much...u should only feed him 2 times a day with treats inbetween, but it would change your dog, so just take a lil bit of food away at a time! I can feel my dogs ribs but not see them to, i can see were htey are just not the lines, and my vet said he is perfect!

If his fur and eyes shines, his skin is not flakey, and he is not too fat or thin plus you are using a prepared dog food, you are feeding him good. It is the results that matter, not what brand of dog food you use or what advertising gimmicks they might use to get your hard-earned money.
