$1.43 a minute i looked at my phone bill it costs that to call from San Jose to Ontario direct. Hope that helps. Its stupid that the phone companies charce you a big fee for using a phone card though, but you can also use it in a phone booth and not get charged anything.

I don't think it will cost you above a dollar to call to Canada. As a matter of fact it will cost you even less than 10 cents a min. You can call Europe for under 50 cents now a days. But I think you should call AT&T and find out what the exact rate for the phone plan that you have is. And by the way, someone here suggested that you could use calling cards from the phone booth and not get charged, well that is not true because when you call from the phone booth you will get less minutes from the card than from home even though the operator will tell you that you have x amounts of minutes to talk you'll actually get less than that.

Get a long distance plan that allows you to call anywhere in North America, thats what I have - for a flat fee you get unlimited long distance - but I live in Canada so dont know what the US offers.

My friend in Florida has a long distance plan that allows him to call me for about 5 cents a minute

Generally if you call from a phone booth you will be charged at TWICE the rate for the calling card, they will deduct two minutes for every minute you actually use

Find someone that uses their cable company for their phone service. We get 1000 mins long distance free every month to anywhere in North America... I would imagine the same holds for most customers in the U.S. who use the internet for telephoning...
