I generally prefer regulated, LED flashlights or headlights while camping, but for keeping in the car, it's hard to beat the value of a 3D or 4D full-size MagLite for under $20. Not only do they put out a decent amount of light, they are heavy and strong enough to be used as a club or hammer in an emergency. You can improve the light output by replacing the bulb with a Terralux 1-watt/140 lumen LED for around $18. If you want better/brighter/longer-lasting, the Fenix PD30+ R5 (2xCR123A, 257 lumen high) or LD20+ R5 (2xAA, 180 lumen high) are great flashlights in the $60-$70 range. If you want to learn more about flashlights and even look up reviews on specific models, check the site referenced below: .

u didn't specify what a "flashlight" was.
how about 15,000,000 candle power.
it is about as big as a waste basket.
runs on a rechargeable battery or plugs into AC or DC auto power. it has a lens about 10" diameter
and will stop a train.
I guess the point is, there are trade offs and the above is the brightest "flashlight" u can get. If u want a kid to carry it around, then u will have to settle for something less bright.
for the car, u might want one with aux red flashing lights.
one that plugs into the power outlet. One that uses 6 volt battery instead of cells. A shake charge unit.
none of these are going to match the brightest u can get.
there are others but here is a Humvee

There is a new flashlight out that is a little bigger than the width of your palm. It has 9 led light bulbs (ultra strong), encased in metal (similar to the original mag light) but it is labelled PT (performance tool). It takes 3 AAA batteries but WOW, what a bright little light. It is similar to the kind you see on some of the shows like CSI. (Only available in the U.S. currently) Similar to this is the NightHawk 3 (also used by law enforcement) which may not be metal but can be seen at and ordered at:

Also police often recommend the following site to each other:

for tactical flashlights with lots of power.

LEDs are good, shock-resistant and bright. Look for something with more than a watt of output, probably a Luxeon or Cree.
One thing to consider is that regular alkaline batteries don't last very well in your car. When you need the light, it may be dead. Get a flashlight with Lithium batteries, they have a shelf-life of 10 years or so. The 123 size cells are common, you'll find lights using these at Target, or Walmart. Look online at Brightguy.com or explore the CandlePower Forums online. A headlamp is very handy for car use, as it keeps your hands free!
