Well, it depends on who is shooting.
If it is just radicals shooting at the population, you should run, but keep a low silhouette. Look for the nearest cover that will stop a bullet. If there is nothing of the sort, look for something that will hide you from sight.
If there are multiple forces fighting, and you are just caught in the middle, I suggest you jump to the ground, and play dead. If you are running, it might make you look guilty, as if you are someone they should be shooting at.
Also remember that the human eye is attracted to movement. Once you are out of the direct danger, do nothing that will attract attention.

I too would reconsider my travel plans, and fire my travel agent in the process for recommending such a crappy place. But if you have to go, seek cover and then move away from the conflict. That's the best way. Don't pick up AK's or a weapon for defense as this will make you an even better target...to both sides of the conflict.

Pack clean underpants, preferably white, do not shout "Dont Shoot I am an American" or "I know George Bush"
If you see John Wayne say "Howdy Partner" or
"The Hell you will Hombre".
Playing dead works very well and dont be tempted to move after 5 mins in case the bad guys are watching the area you lay down, if peering around corners do it from ground level.
Learn the local words for "dont shoot" and "Help" or "Medic"

first thing to do is to stablish where the gunfight is... if you are in the middle of it.. if youre in the crossfire etc... best thing to do is to lay low.. crouch on the ground and crawl to a safe place... behind walls.. under concrete... somewhere where bullets cannot reach.... get away from the scene as fast as you can... stay focused and dont get into an adrenalin lock...

yeah you want to get in the middle of a gunfight without personal bodygaurds or a firearm, if it happens dont let them catch you, get cover and dont freeze up, establish quick which direction is your safe out and use it, dont stay there to let them catch you but use evasion and duck and cover techniques, your better off dead then being beheaded on aljazeera or being tortured. Never get got, your crazy and im thinking of going overseas for oil work to,

I think you should just play dead, if your're dead what else can they do to you really. If your hiding they could take you hostage and torture you for months, or you could be killed. Better alive than dead, or held captive. It's your best option. After the smoke clears head for the hills.

Get behind something solid and lie flat.
Or crouch and run.
Your choice of the moment.
They probably won't be shooting at you, anyhow.
