Is it hard to learn how to play the Saxaphone?

I found that learning to play the saxophone pretty well in the beginning was not very hard compared to other instruments (such as violin or guitar). However, after playing for four years I seemed quite difficult to go from being a mediocre player to being a very good player. Therefore, if you want to learn the instrument well enough to play a few melodies or to add the sound to your band it would not take you very long. But, to become a very good player well versed in jazz studies, etc would take a lot of time and practice like any other instrument. Also, it helps a lot if you have played a woodwind instrument before.

I mean no disrespect to you whatsoever- BUT.. everyone keeps asking if any particular instrument is HARD to learn, like everyone wants the easy way for everything and it just wears me out. IF you want to be good at ANYTHING it wont be easy. It will take work and dedication. There are no easy paths here. Sax is "easier" than some other instruments. but if you want to REALLY be profficient then it will still be "hard".

Not really. I learned when I was 10.But for the common notes, the most keys that need to be pressed at once is 8 or 9. Try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxophone

P.S. Don't worry. Saxophone is one of the few words I have trouble spelling. That and definitely.

no, it might run you an extra 100 bucks at a pawn shop, but invest in a flute. the fingering is about the same as a sax and it will teach you breath control. you'll be playing in no time with a little effort.

I started playing when I was 10 I remember the only really problem for me was reading the notes. I loved it and wish I kept playing. It is what you put into it like the more effort the better.

Probably one of the easiest instruments to learn. But it'll take a lot of work to play well.

Not at all! It's very easy to learn the basics, I think it's easier than the Clarinet. :)
