Do not exceed 2000 mg sodium per day. Calories, depending on your height/weight, should generally be around 2000 calories/day, and usually 1800 for a male looking for weight loss and 1500 for women looking for weight loss. It depends. But DO NOT go below 1200/day otherwise your body will enter starvation mode and there are many complications to that. Fiber should be around 26 g/day, I believe. Calories are the sole factor in determining weight loss. It doesn't matter if you eat pure fat, so long as you stay at a certain amount of cals it's all the same. 1000 cals of fat is the same as 1000 cals of carbs. Calories are energy units. If your body uses less energy than you consume, it will store the excess energy in the form of fat. Excessive salt DOES NOT lead to fat gain. It may make you bloat, therefore making you feel swollen and larger, but that's because it causes you to retain water. If you accidentally eat too much sodium then constantly rehydrate yourself with water to flush out the sodium. And "nonfat" foods does not mean that they do not contain calories. Nonfat foods simply have no fat calories, and I suppose some people are on low fat diets for the sake of heart health. You need fat in your diet. Some ignorant people like to think that "nonfat foods" = weight loss. It does not. Again, CALORIES determine whether you gain or lose weight, but eat too little and you're going to suffer from serious medical complications. Whoo. What a mouthful. Good luck. :)

processed carbohydrates and high fructose corn syrup are far worst ingredients to look for than the fat content. they contribute to the decrease in insulin sensitivity greater than does dietary fats. you want to look at the amount of sugars per serving in the food item, which for anything that is truly "healthy" would be less than 10-15 grams.

granola sucks.

Eat oatmeal or special K instead.
