hi all

there is a section in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that states:

2418 "It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery. One can love animals; one should not direct to them the affection due only to persons."

is this saying that people shouldnt have pets and that they money we spend on them should be used to aid humans instead?

and that by continually breeding animals for pets, it is causing them to be born and to die neelessly?

i am quite confused now becuase i have never known that having a pet was bad. it you treat it well, is it still against church teachings?

what about zoos? are they 'bad' too?

any insight is appreciated, as well as links if you can

thankyou and God bless

it's ok to have pets...zoos are ok. animals are God's creation too and we as humans are given the responsibility to take care of them(nature as a whole)...

that section of the catechism refers to people who choose to ignore the poor people. that they choose to pamper their pets too much as to traet an animal like a human person. well, it's ok to buy dog food for your dog it's ok to pamper.. but let's not forget to give also to the needy... a small part of what you have doesn't hurt, right. it's a matter of sharing and not to ignore and forget those who are in need...

see i have dogs, and i give to the poor..

Much of the teachings of the Catholic church are based on self-sacrifice. That's kind of a given de-fault handicap of the game. For those who can take it, let them take it. I sinfully own many useless pets. I'm hoping the dog will one day bite a robber. I'm hoping the cats will eat all the bugs and spiders in the basement, and I'm hoping the fish will forgive me, and the hamster...well, they only live a couple of years anyway, and seeds are cheap. And the bunny. Now that rabbit probably has to go.

No it isn't saying that at all. It is speaking of absurd excess. Like the rich person who spends $10,000 for a diamond dog collar, or leaves 5 million dollars to their cat when they die.

Basically, yeah, if you believe the Pope and his minions are infallible. Or it could mean, that the "normal daily upkeep" of a pet is acceptable, but to take "heroic efforts" to prolong the life of a pet, in "wrong".

I don't know, I gave up on Catholicism long ago because of the whole "infallibility" thing.
