when my maltese gets neutered Wednesday? How will he act? Will his personality change in any way? It would be great if you had personal experiences to share. Thanks for all your help; it is greatly appreciated.

I foster dogs for a rescue and have had many experiences with this. It normally does not change their personality. You will see that the day they have it done they will be groggy and sleepy but the next day they should be back to normal. You need to make SURE they leave the incision alone otherwise they could get an infection.
Thank you for neutering your dog. You just greatly reduced the risk of cancer, and made him a pet, not a dog who spends his life in a cage waiting to breed.

he may be a little sleepy when he gets home.. its the anastesia wearing off.. just let him sleep and offer him a small amount of food and water.

The vet should give you some instructions on how to clean and care for the incision, and what to look out for... he should also give you an emergency phone number, just in case. He may be a little sore for a day or two.. most boys are up moving around the next day like nothing happened.

You can bathe him 10 days after the surgery, when the incision has healed. The vets ussually use some type of surgical glue on the boys that dissolves as it heals.

His personality wont change. He may be a little calmer. Neutering will help with some behavoiral issues.. he wont be as ansy to get out the door and go find females, he will be less likely to mark, he will also be less aggressive. He will still be loving, faithful and playful as always.. but he will be more focused on you, because he's less interested in marking territory and seeking mates.

the first couple of days after surgery he will probably be tired and basically sleep most of the day and may not even be that hungry. He will most likely come home with a C-collar on to keep him from licking at the stitches. His personality may change slightly over time if he was aggressive towards other dogs or tended to want to wander off or mate with everything in site. He will still be the lovable dog you are used to so don't worry about that!!

He will be very calm for the next few days. Most people worry about it, but there is not much to worry about. His personality should not change. Of course he will be different for a few days, but he will soon be back on his feet.

*Kudos for getting his neutered.
