The God dishonoring hellfire doctrine is not a Bible based doctrine. As you mentioned, it doesn't fit with what the Bible really teaches. The condition of the dead is made clear at Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, where it says: "The dead know nothing . . . In the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom." Since the dead have no conscious existence, hell cannot be a fiery place of torment where the wicked suffer after death. The Bible hell is the common grave of mankind where good people as well as bad ones go.

For a more detailed explanation about what hell really is you can read the following article:

He didn't. The lake of fire represents the final and complete destruction of the wicked. The wages of sin is in fact death, it is not eternal life in torment. This is a common theme throughout the entire bible.

edit: and when they tell you that hell is spiritual death which means separation from God, don't believe it. Read the following text...

Psalm 139:7-8 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

I like your euphemism. Death does not necessarily mean the absence of life, which is the modern definition. In the bible, death means separation. Physical death is the separation of the spirit from the body. Spiritual death is the separation of the spirit form God. Eternal death is the separation of the person from the glorious presence of God. God is in heaven and being separate from him means going eternally to the opposite of heaven which is hell. That is what "death" means in the verse that you quoted. (Rom. 6:23)

He didn't and you are right on. Burning people is a babylonian teaching that throug centuries has mixed unfourtunatly into christianity. Nobody will burn in fact all will be reconciled unto God.

I believe it's speaking of spiritual death.

Spiritual death means to be disconnected from God.
