I am going to say Atlanta. Houston is a large city and home to large companies and the Johnson Space centre and it also has a large port but Atlanta is the Capital of Georgia, home for the Center of Disease Control, Atlanta Airport is the busiest in the world, it is home to large companies like Coca Cola and Tuner networks, CNN, the Weather Channel, Delta Airlines, AT&T Wireless and many other companies.
I say on a US stand point Atlanta is more important on an international it is close maybe houston because of the space centre and port. These two cities are very hard to chose from.

Houston is definitely more important. It is home to the Port of Houston, which receives more foreign freight than any other port in the US. Houston is recognized as one of the energy capitals of the world. It is home to the Texas Medical Center, which houses some of the best doctors and hospitals in the country. Houston has Rice University, which is one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Last but not least, Houston is home to the Johnson Space Center, which is the communications center for all US space missions. Houston was the first word said on the moon.

Atlanta is a great city, but Houston makes more of an impact on the country.

It depends on what is important to you. It's hard for me to imagine that Houston is more important than Atlanta but I don't know Houston. I'm impressed with the argument about the port, Rice University, and the space program. But in terms of overall culture, diversity, arts, history, modernization, wealth, technology, restaurants, shopping, clubs, business, politics, social activism, tourism, conventions, weather, leisure, attractions, educational institutions, surrounding area, size.....I don't think Houston is ahead of Atlanta....but now I'm interested in finding out. Thanks !

It depends on whether you live in Georgia or Texas. Importance is directly related to their relation to YOU.

Atlanta came first, however.
