i just bought the Toshiba HD DVD high definition dvd player (HD A2) model. I haven't bought any HD movies yet but plan to soon. Today i set it up and decided just to test out the upscaling for dvd's. The tv said the dvd was in 1080i but i coudn't tell a difference from my 360 which upscals it to 480p

I also baught a HDMI Cable to go with it made my rocketfish or soemthign liek that. it is a middle of the road cost. not the best not the worst. can anyone help me understand if im doing soemthing wrong or if this hd dvd player just sucks at upscaling dvd's.

thanks for any help..

Upscaling can't make an SD source to look like HD, no matter what.
You may even find out that if you output at 480i, your TV's scaler can probably (depending on your TV) do a better job in scaling up to its native resolution than your HD player!!
Your TV has probably a 720p native resolution, so avoid all the up/down scaling and just feed it 480i and let it do its own scaling. Alternatively feed it 480p or 720p and see if the player can do a better scaling.

your tv doesn't know/care where the signal is coming from.
if it a 1080p set then it will upscale anything to 1080p.
u send it 480p from your 360 and it upscales it to 1080p
u send it a 720p or a 1080i or a 1080p and u still get 1080p.

why would u see a difference????????

if the source is different then u may see a difference.
like a 1080p source (not upscaled) will sure look better than anything less.

anything less will look the same for the same source regardless of where the upscale is happening.

HOWEVER, some devices do upscale better than others. If u don't see a difference than the tv and dvd are doing the same job in their upscale.
