I'm 17 years old (18 Tuesday) and I work in a restaurant. There's a older woman in her 60's or so who has the same title as me but she is always yelling at me and criticising what I do and now she has got the supervisor to yell at me all the time too.
Is there a law or something against this? because I honestly don't do anything wrong and they yell at me in front of customers aswell.

I hate working there so much but I can't quit until I have another job.

I've been there for a year this weekend.

It's hard to tell a manager coz they won't listen to anyone.

And yes i'm pretty sure it is her hobby.

I don't know if there is, but you'd probably have a hard time proving anything about your boss being in cahoots with the older worker. The woman in her 60s has probably been doing this work for a while and feels it's her natural born right to criticize you since she's your elder. Probably is friends with the supervisor who is siding with her. Just start looking for another job and get out of there. I have rarely had a restaurant job without some kind of pettiness or bullying going on. Just mind your business and start looking around for something new. You are young, and employers are more willing to hire someone your age, rather than someone middle-aged or older. Good luck.

I don't know how long you have been there, but if it is less than 90 days, they can fire you without notice or reason. If it is over 90 days they are stuck with you unless you either quit or do something that you can be fired for.

Yelling at you in front of customers is actionable by federal law. It is harassment. It creates a hostile work environment. It is unprofessional. It will drive off customers. It will cost the company money.

You are there to do a job, and you need to give the job your full focus while there. Don't make the same mistakes twice. Don't give that other woman the satisfaction of seeing you emotionally offended... for all you know, messing with young kids is her hobby. The less of a response you give her, the less she will be bothered with you. Be polite, be professional. You don't have to be a doormat.

You need to ask for a private meeting in the manager's office, spell out that there is a learning curve and that you will try very hard to do better and better, and you really want the manager to be proud of you and the job you do for him. Ask him for suggestions on how to improve yourself. Do this earnestly and you may very well see a change in his behavior.
Ask him what can be done to stop all the yelling, particularly since that other woman's yelling is not only unprofessional, but can be classified as harassment. You can ask him to talk to her about being more professional.

If this is a chain store, and you cannot get any support from the manager, you might be able to call someone in corporate human resources that you can describe the situation to. They don't like this sort of thing.

You need to keep applying for jobs and hopefully get one soon. There are laws against what they are doing....but you will be long gone before you get any response. The lady in her 60's is probably insecure because she doesn't want you to replace her. The supervisor is just ignorant. Some people are very small minded and unkind, sadly you have two of them to put up with. GOOD LUCK ON FINDING A NEW JOB - Happy Birthday = new job. !! enjoy when it happens.

You will go through several jobs in your life time. My best suggestion? Give this place a 2 week notice that your quitting, and move on. Always give a 2 week notice for any job you obtain and plan to quit. Why? It looks professional on your resume. Hang on for two more weeks after a notice, always. It gives the business you are working for time to replace you. Plus. on your resume in the future, you don't want to have the just got up and quit on your resume. Giving the business you are working for a 2 week notice shows respect for yourself and the company you are currently working for. Find some motivation to get another job. GEE, the bad crap you are getting now at your current job, should be a motivation. Just don't get up and quit. Thats all Im saying. Give your two weeks, and that gives you the motivation, to find another job, as well.

Older people can be annoying when the feel threatened. That's all it is. They have been working their whole life and here you are 17 and making about as much money as they are. Well that sucks for them, too bad. Don't quit, because that's what they want you to do. Continue doing your job to to the best of you ability and if the HARASSMENT continues then report it to your supervisor's supervisor. Its called reverse ageism and harassment. I've been through the same situation.

Man this sounds like a situation I was in last year. And Yes I got treated like sh*t everytime I went to work. The lady was evil and one time she told the whole staff "I look at this kid right here (me) and she said "Who would hire this kid?" I mean what a c*nt! Man She pissed me off so bad. She always yelled at me and I know what your saying. I did the same as you and looked for another job but never had luck. I got fortunate where she finally quit and before she did I got my revenge by spraying her down with the hose :). It was so much fun. Oh and the owner was just as much as an asshole as she. Both ignorant assholes that I will never forgive but just keep looking for another job. I'm sure you'll find one. Keep applying is the key. Good Luck.

Or are there a risk romantic ties with the boss. study your venture and tread heavily. The pay element is what gets me the main. For any hours over 40 you will desire to get a minimum of time and a a million/2, or a million.5 x usual pay $. With it being a small enterprise they don't have an effectual Human Reasoures branch. additionally, the boss feels like the style to hearth you in case you push the situation. communicate over with the Umemployment place of work and locate out the guidelines. in case you get fired you will would desire to comprehend the place that's besides. right here is what i'd do although. have you ever tried arguing with a tree or a rock. Or have you ever long previous swimming and screamed underwater. no longer something happens to the tree, rock, or water. each of those issues has a differtent sources yet all of them respond interior the comparable way- they do no longer something. The tree will bend and rustle its leaves or say "i'll get to that..." and then do no longer (quietly). The rock basically sits there. no longer something. Nada. Zip. The water engages the guy, totally envoples them and aborbs the question, the instructions, the yells, the cries. And end the tip you're nevertheless moist. no longer something happens. you will desire to comprehend you artwork for them and that they do no longer artwork for you. yet, you will properly be smarter. I carry around a sprint peice of duct tape- it jogs my memory to maintain my mouth close. additionally, by ability of you doing all of the artwork, the boss is getting extra properly worth out of you single than if he had 2 human beings there. He does not care approximately your "emotions" in basic terms with reference to the outcomes.

You are smart to consider the job first....you can find another job...so don't stay miserable forever.

We have all been in positions when we were treated unfairly....it happened to me several times...once when I was hired to work under a boss when he was on vacation. He took it out on me!

Really watch how you "react" to the lady and to the supervisor....because you are probably reacting in some way.
Be polite....and don't show how you feel...just do your job...and sooner or later it will show this lady is out to get you.

If they are yelling at you...what is it for....maybe there is something you aren't seeing....but keep your cool..apologize and take the more mature attitude. Then move on when you can...and realize no workplace is perfect...there will always be people like this....she is enjoying taking it out on you, probably because you are younger....You take the "high road"...and act like it doesn't bother you, even when it does! It's no fun picking on a "victim" who refuses to be one!

Do your work very well, find a better job in your free time, be as soft as possible to your employer and ignore all the yellings till you are there because you have no choice. In the first place try to solve the problem by addressing it very gently so that your gentle attitude can overcome her guilt of yelling.

You haven't been working there long enough to worry about your reputation or resume. You're too young for that. As soon as you find another job...WALK.....

You can always tell the prospective employer you're in-between or even that you haven't worked before. If you worked somewhere else before these jerks, use THEM as a reference.
