not a lot but there has to be some general age that can be used as a bench mark because it makes things so much easier.

There is a very big emotional difference there. It occurs between these 2 ages but for some girls it happens soon after they pass 12 and for other closer to when they get to 14.
When my daughter was passing through this time in her life, she started out being a child who needed Mommy a lot to help her through things in her life. As she progressed towards the 14 age she needed Mommy less to handle the situations that come with living life and became more able to find solutions to life's situations. Mommy became Mom. Mom is there to make sure she stays on the right track and still helps when life deals us a dread full deal but she knows what she needs to do and where she wants to go in life. Many times during the transition there was the clashes when she thought she knew what she should be allowed to do and didn't like to be told that it wasn't appropiate for her to be in that type of situation but as she matured she realized that Mom was right and because Mom cared for her she was saved from what could have been a bad situation.
I remember when I was young, I matured faster than other girls my same age. It was hard sometimes wishing that I could be with the older group because they did cooler things and had so many more privileges and I had. It was hard to wait but there are things that you can do in this waiting time. You can volunteer time in other areas that don't have an age restrictions. I know it isn't as cool as having fun but it builds you up in the eyes of the adults that are watching and judging your maturity level.

Yes, there is an emotional difference. At 12, you are just going through changes and emotions. At 14, you have somewhat leveled out, and are considered mature enough to handle situations that 12 year olds can't. I assume you are talking about dances and youth conference, to name a couple. They are very fun, but it is well worth the wait, Don't worry, you will get the same amount of time that everyone gets. 4 years of fun :) I wish it could go on forever, but all good things must end. *Sigh*
And I am deeply offended. I am a veeeerrrry mature boy for my age. :P

I'm not a mormon, but I think I have a good answer. Don't wish your childhood/youth away. You will have all of your life to be an adult. Don't rush it.
I know that it seems like the high-schoolers have activities that seem better, but there is a time and season for everything. You time is coming.
Enjoy this special time in your life. Enjoy each day and stage of life God gives you. There stages of development we must go through, that can't be missed. I'm not talking about just the physical changes. I'm talking about emotional, social and spiritual changes. If you miss a stage in any of these areas, you will lack the special gifts and lessons you needed for your future.
Please, don't wish any day God has given you away. Be patient. Don't grow up too fast.

Ironically, 12 year olds are actually more rational than 14 year olds. I saw a psychologist on television - he said that he would rather trust a 12 year old to drive a car than a 16 year old. From the onset of puberty to the early 20's, the brain has a difficult time managing reason and logic.
As for Mormons, that's just a rite of passage. It has very little to do with actual age. They had to pick some cut-off point, so they picked 14.

when your a teenager 1 year is like ten years of maturity.
now people mature differently at different ages, so you may be more mature that some 14 yr old's you know.
But if you don't have the patience to wait until you are 14 then I think you are not as mature as you think.
Oh yes and you are a sexist -- (boys never mature -- sexism)

the difference is 2 years of maturity.
Deal with it. Give glory to God that you're not 10.

Two years of experience, and hormonal changes which occur around that time.

Nothing of importance. I hope that as you mature you will come to understand how absurd Mormonism is.
