We are in the middle of a family discussion that came up about twinkies. Someone here thinks that a twinkie will last 100 years. And also thinks that nothing will eat a twinkie like bugs and mice etc. Does anyone out there know about what the shelf life of a twinkie is? Or what about the mice? is this true? Does anyone know how to deep fry a twinkie?

They're the only "food" that could survive the nuclear holocaust that happened after the Y2K bug hit ;););)

Other than Carvel Cakes, that is...

Edit: Apparantly, they can last for over 30 years - check out the second link below...

It's not 100 years... By the time that Twinkie's reach your home, they're already about 6 months old. Twinkies last about 6-8 months after you get it to your home. This is about the length of time for it to change the origional taste. If you are looking to see how long it would take for one to be broken down... then you are probably looking at about 50 years.

LOL, I think they're still measuring the first box! The website doesn't have anything addressing this, but interestingly, Bill Clinton put a package of Twinkies in a time capsule. According to SNOPES, the shelf life of a twinkie is 25 days.

I think a hundred years might be a bit conservative. As far as bugs and mice, I have seen SMALL bits of the cake eaten away by mice and squirrels and ants eating the cake but I have NEVER seen anything eat the "cream filling" except humans.

Deep fried twinkies are made by dipping them in a sweetened waffle type batter and deep frying them on a stick.

Twinkies are like roaches, you aint gonna kill it. It can last like 42 million years and you could still eat it. I like the way your family thinks, this is a discussion that my family would have. I think Ramen Noodles have the same shelf life of a twinkie....bring that up at the next meeting of the minds.

Correction:: Twinkies can survive fires, they just re-mold into
peeps, but are still certainly edible. I believe in America
theres just a class of food thats manufactured to appeal to the
lowest common denominator like Twinkies, Velveeta, Spam, Wbush...

A twinkie will survive ANYTHING! Like mentioned before, nuclear holocost, hurrican, tornado, most natural desasters. dont think fire though.

As long as it is sealed and intact its pretty much indestructable due to the fact I dont think twinkies contain any natural ingredient like milk etc. I think twinkies are made from fluffy vaseline with flavor added or something! LOLOLOL

As far as I know, unless the wrapper is torn or has a hole in it, a Twinkie will survive a nuclear holocaust.
