I disagree with the general consensus of almost everyone that answered my question. My thoughts are that when we pull all troops out, Iraq will be taken over by insurgents from both Syria and Iran. They will stop at nothing, and because of the weak-willed Iraqis that we've been protecting and training will not have the will to fight, the country will be taken over. This is exactly how I remember the last days of VietNam, of which I was there and am a Vet.

I agree with you to a certain extent. I'm not sure we should pull completely out. However, if the Iraqi's don't want to defend their own lands, what the hell are we over there for? If the insurgents are in Iran and Syria, why aren't we there? We have the manpower, and we've already taken on the role of the "World's Police" why not live up to it?

Oh, and PS, Thank you for your service in Vietnam! Not many of you guys got a warm reception when you got home...my Dad being one of them...just know that now people are grateful for what you did. Hooo-rah, Air Borne!

But I hope you realize Maliki's gov is Shiite dominant gov. And Iran is Shiite. Shiites don't like to fight each other.

Non of neighboring countries want to get involved directly in Iraq. Shiite neighbors funnel money and weapons to Shiites in Iraq and Sunni neighbors do the same. You won't see neighboring countries walk into Iraq. With exception of Turkey perhaps who are mad at Kurds on Northern Iraq. But that's separate issue.

Iraq neighbors Sunni and Shiite countries. Non of them want to see chaos in Iraq that could give Shiite or Sunnis complete control of Iraq.

The troops won't be out for many years. There will be some major withdrawal starting next year. But we'll still have ~50000+ troops there.

Even if they decide to go with complete withdrawal no one can say for sure what will happen. It's very unpredictable region.

There's really not too many who advocate complete immediate withdrawal. Many ask for more political pressure on Iraqi gov in conjuction with gradual pull out.

What oil fields? Since our invasion, the amount of oil pumped in Iraq is totally insignificant. Most of its burns up or flows out for cracked pipelines into the sand.
Beside that, Iraq was taken over by terrorists and civil war in 2003 and is in chaos since. Our troops are just there to protect Haliburton civilians, who burn through our tax money, with no result ,but making some CEO's richer.

Iran... maybe not upfront but in the background.

Personally I think we should fly an American flag over each oil well until they can stand on their own two feet, but that would make us an occupying force instead of a liberating force and things would get worse over there, believe it or not.

What happened in Vietnam, now we are friends.
We can't control Iraq without keeping an Army of Occupation there forever. Let them sort it out. When they get hungry they'll come home.

You were in Vietnam during the last days? Two years after our withdrawal?

Who will run the oil fields? The same people who are running them now. OPEC, Shell and BP. Nothing will change.
