I'm thinking of going to Bangkok solo to check out what is all the rave about. Will I be lost in translation or be a "fresh meat" to the local?

Bangkok is a very large spread out city with over 12 million people. It depends where you want to stay, or where you want to go.
Hotels can be as low as $6.00 up to Hundreds per night.
Meals. Streat food, about a buck, Hard Rock Bangkok $50.00.
Beer at 7-11 1 dollar
Beer at bar (yes that kind), $3.50
And yes you could end up as fresh meat just like any other city in the world.
BUT if you get to see the real Thailand, you will feel like you are in National Geographic

I'm from Bangkok. Feb-March is pretty good, not so hot, depending on what you're looking for. Thailand has pretty much similar weather the whole year, except now to about Feb, it's pretty cool. In the north, and northeast, the weather went down to below 10 degree celsius in some area, esp on top of the mountain can get to zero. April is the hottest month of the year, but many people would travel to Bangkok to play water festival or Songkran as we call it. It's between 13-15 April, where people just go around and pour water at one another. The whole country is celebrating the same event but some province might be on slightly different days or even longer. You'll enjoy Bangkok.

Not a problem going there on your own but DO a lot of reading and research first so you know what to expect and what to keep in mind. Lots of people go there on their own and they survive ok. There is no reason why you shouldn't. Just DON'T GO IN TOTALLY BLIND.

Bangkok can be a lot fun but, like any other city in the world, there are people who are out to rip you off as well.

There is so much we can tell you here for a first timer and with a broad, open question like yours it would be better for you to do some research yourself first. Get yourself a book The Lonely Planet Guide to Thailand. It will be worth every cent of your investment.

There are things you need to know, like - Thai customs and culture, Do's and Dont's, where to go, what to see, etc However, having said that - Thai people are very friendly and will help you and anything you do wrong (unintentionally ) would be dismissed as "ignorant foreigner". Bangkok is geard for tourists so you will find it is not as daunting as it may sound. English is spoken enough there for you to get what you want.

Just DON'T be naive. Exercise some travelling common sense and personal security and you will be fine.

BUT DO YOUR RESEARCH!!

Best if you know some of the local language first. This will help you understand the people and the place better. Going solo is fine, gives you options without having to do any consultation. Just be street smart while you are there.

No absolutely not. Being a single man in Thailand...

Yes Mark there is a God. You'll see Bangkok and a single men go together very very well. You'll be fine, but read a little on Thai culture before you go! :-)

Thailand is like Heaven only better in that you can enjoy a paradise in this life.

im going alone too on November for the "loi Krathong" festival.. I dont knwo what to expect and I just want to be surprised and enthralled by the culture, beauty and the experience. Just make sure to be on your guard all the time. I'm a Bangkok virgin since it will be my first time to go there -- so let's just enjoy. don't be daunted. If I can do it, then you can do too.

It is safer that any American city, having said that just be careful about putting yourself in a difficult position, do not go around flashing money, And make sure the person you are taking home is a women, If she looks to good to be true ,she probably is a lady boy.

"Fresh meat" is preferred by locals as they don't know the going rates for services at offer.

Do a bit of on-line reading and get to know your way around.
