i bought my sweet 16 dress today and i love it, although i am afraid it might be a little too beady, but the price of the alteration really surprised me and my mom. what is the average cost to hem the bottom of a ballgown? the skirt is tiered so i think that makes it a little more complicated.

the alterations came to $135, is that normal considering the complexity of the skirt? there are no alterations need on the bust or bodice.

How big is this dress? For a wedding dress that needs bustling and hemming, I'd say 100-200 is average. For a simple gown, I'd say $30-50.
It depends on multiple things. The fabric-how easy is it to work with. Chiffon overlays are very difficult b/c the fabric is so delicate. The stitches- do you have nice big seams to work with? Is the dress set up to be easy to alter or do they have to add darts to make it fit right? How much work are you doing-taking in the bust, just hemming?
There are a lot of different dress styles and my bridesmaids had it lucky b/c the way the top was done made it very easy to take in the top. However my dress had layers of overlay and all 5 layers had to be individually hemmed.

It really depends on the dress and where you're located. All vendors in different areas charge different rates. In the DC area to alter a simple gown will be average $500 ... if the gown is more complex, then the alterations are more expensive.

It really depends on the dress, how much needs to be taken off, etc.
Normal hemming shouldn't cost too much. Once you add in beading being moved around, they try not to screw up any pattern involved, and that costs extra. If they can't raise it at the waist (the pattern goes across the waistline, or there is no seam at the waist), then they have no choice and that adds in, too. It could cost up to a few hundred dollars.
