GET:
1] brushed chrome lamps
2] stone, wood, or iron accessories [ candle holders, ornaments, boxes, etc. ]
3] tatami mat flooring, or white or black flokati rug [ sheds ]
4] black leather/chrome reading chair, black mesh desk chair
5] textured, quilted comforter [ velvet, for example ] in black or charcoal
6] chrome or iron headboard, all angles [ no gentle curves like brass ones ]
7] no curtains - get blinds, panels,or shades, in a textured gray or black
8] pick your favorite bright [ blue, red, green ] for candles,
desk accessories, etc.
9] put all posters in clear unframed acrylic covers - so they look like they are floating on the wall!
TO MAKE this look work the best, all of room must be clean and tidy - sort out, throw away, or donate whatever you don't need, and store items in closet, and underbed bins.

IKEA is just about the best place you could shop at if you want to make your room more modern looking. Also if you add some real geometric pieces of furniture, that should give it the mondern look also. Don't be afraid to add black and a lot of neutral earth tone colors in your space.

Your idea for the frames is a good idea. I would get decorative pillows in black and white with a purple bed spread or vice versa. You can also get decorative lamps and new curtains. I always look at ikea for good ideas!!
