There isn't enough time to meet the needs of this birthday. But, for next year, you might search around and get him a copy of Rudyard Kipling's "Barrack Room Ballads". A barracks room is the British name for a barracks. Kipling wrote these when he was in the British Army in India. Some of it is pretty earthy stuff, but it shows how little life in the military has changed over the past hundred-plus years.
Here's a small sample from the poem "Tommy":
O, it's Tommy this and Tommy that and chuck him out, the brute.
But, it's savior of his country when the guns begin to shoot..."
Like I said, nothing much has changed. Wish him best wishes from an old Navy man who did eight years with Fleet Marine Forces and send him my personal "Semper Fi!".

There once was a Marine from Nebrask
Who had two balls made of brass
When he rubbed them together
They played "Stormy Weather"
And lightning shot out of his A_ _ !!!

Don't know any good poems, but he is lucky enough to share my birthday. I will drink a toast to him. Happy Birthday and thank you for serving. Is there any particular drink he likes?
