My Syrian hamster runs constantly on her wheel, and she never wants to be handled.
She lets me PET her, no problem, its just that when I go to pick her up, she runs away. Either that, or she just simply won't come off her wheel.
And if I DO ever get her out, I have a special 'play cage', which is just a separate 4-level cage made of metal where I have many toys and obstacles for her to play with.
HOWEVER, she just chews on the cage bars, which I know is very unhealthy for her.
I want her to run around and play with other toys, but she doesn't.
I have tried a few things, but I don't know what else to try.
PLEASE HELP!!
Thank you SO SO SO much in advance!!
:)

hello,
actually, its okay for her to chew on the cage, it helps to trim her teeth for proper chewing and prevent overgrowing. But to help her, it is best to put in chew toys.
as for the wheel, you can take it out for awhile and put in toys.see what is her reaction, or maybe she really needs you to hold her.hamster are generally scared of being grabbed. it very normal. But after you have held her, she will calm down.
or maybe she is trying to catch your attention. Give her some treats. see if it works!
good luck :)

Well no matter what kind of hamster it is, all hamsters love to run on their wheel, if it annoys you, you can get a metal wheen which is much more silent, if it's holding that you want to do, just try to grab her, she may bite because she might not want to be handled but if you do it every day, at night (which is when they're most active) she will enjoy it, you can also get her a plastic ball so she could spend time around you while being out of her cage and doing what she likes to do best.
My hamsters too chew on the bars but it is because they want to get out to run free so the best thing to do would be to get her a ball.
I hope this works, good luck!

My rat used to be like that. She would be on her wheel 24/7. I had to keep her in the bathroom at night because of the squeaking. Eventually the novelty must have worn down. She runs around her cage like normal now. Just give it time. Leave your hand in her cage for a while and she will get used to your hand and might let you pick her up.

There is not much you can do other than let your hamster run on her wheel. They love them. You can find wooden chew sticks at the pet store to put in her cage. That might stop her from chewing on the bars.

Quit worryin she is like other hamsters... other hammys are abosesd with escaping thats just her nature you should exept that. + like all hammys has chosen a few things she likes to do all hammys chew on the cage bars and even if she trys to run when you atemped to pick her up keep tryin cause she will exept you after a while just dont give up all hammys are stuborn so somtimes you have to beat tham at there own game. so like stay stuborn with her just keep tryin to pick her up and she will cave. It dosent matter that she runs on her wheel alot she is an energetic hammy who has discoverd she can run till she is tired and she will not bump in to the side of her cag to get her to associate you with her fave toy get a hammy ball and let her run through the room in it and hold her every few minites. maybe she doesn't get enough contact with you and i8s scared of you and that is why she runs away. you need to hold her and take her out of the cage more. she's on her wheel so much because she needs the exercise and to get rid of excess energy. hold her and help her get used to you by getting her out of the cage and handling her. you could let her wander around on a small blanket on your couch and pet her while she explores. always supervise your pet closely when she is out of her cage so she doesn't escape or get lost/ hurt.

thats the same thing with my gerbil. if she doesnt want to be handled, pick her up anyway. she has to get to know you. and the wheel probally is the only thing in her cage that is fun to her. i mean......what would you do it you were in a cage. and whenever she starts chewing on the cage bars, just poke her. and thats natural.
i hope i helped.
Good Luck!!!!!

It's good she likes the wheel and is getting exercise, isn't that why you bought it?
Try handling her once or twice a day, but don't push it. I think she will eventually get used to you.

no biggie, its fun and keeps her in shape. shes gonna love it so DONT WORRY! and chewing keeps her teeth down to size so just get her some chewing blocks or even the cardboard thing at the end of the toilet paper works.
