Hitler couldn't even get over 18 miles of water to beat the British, which had no military left in 1941. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor for the same reason, Bin Laden pulled of 9/11, a total failure of the USA Government and Air safety. Waht are people thinking, that Japan would have attacked us with elephants over the Bering street?

well, American vessels were in very minimal danger of Japanese and German submarines, and the Japanese did use weather baloons with bombs attached and launched them into the air, so that air currents would carry them to the USA....these were highly uneffective though, as they only injured 2 people. Germany had been working on a secret bomber that could reach the USA, although the war was over before it could be built. For the most part, though, America was not in much danger in either war.

You all forget that the US intelligence of the WWII was aware of the planed attack on Pearl Harbor and they did noting to prevent it. Without any doubt one can say that the army officials of WWII used the Japanese trespass in the same way Bush administration used 9/11. After a ferocious attack even if the country population is not convinced of a military response they will agree with all the schemes of the political power because they don't want to be less patriots...

US did the wright thing in going to war against the Powers of the Axis even tough it was done to late. After the war without the German scientists kidnapped by the Soviets and the Americans many daring projects would have been delayed : genetic research, space race, technology etc. Men like Joseph Mangle where relocated by the powers of the world and worked many years in secret to the scientific revolution.

I am not a liberal so I will not protect them but hillbillies like James make me go insane... In high school and college I was protecting peoples opinions and I often stood up to some rednecks like you who bullied around some of the colleagues that where learning more than us... So you and the other morons (that answered this question in your way) should keep distance from those who try to seriously debate some interesting problems. If this person that asked something interesting is a liberal what the heck are you? KKK member? Cavemen? Abused Children?

Japan had the strongest navy in the world at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. After Pearl Harbor there was no US Navy fleet capable of stopping a Japanese naval attack on the west coast of the US. Their fleet could have landed troops for a raid on the west coast. They captured and held several islands in the Aleutian chain of Alaska . They held these islands for 2 years before the islands were recaptured. You also forget the US military was very weak prior to Pearl Harbor. The US Army was a joke. It was no bigger than the army of Belgium. If Hitler didn't attack the Soviet Union , he would have had a reasonable chance of invading and capturing Britain. His submarines were sinking ships so close to the US east coast that some of these attacks were clearly visible by sunbathers on beaches on the east coast of the US. If he captured Britain and put them out of the war , he could have built a "blue water" navy capable of assisting in an invasion of North America. He would not have invaded the US immediately but would've captured islands such as the Canaries or in the Carribean from which he could have bombed the US. The Germans had plans for a very long range bomber which they nicknamed the "America bomber". You also forget it took the trauma of the attack on Pearl Harbor to convince a majority of the US population that they should participate in WWII. Had the Japanese not attacked Pearl Harbor triggering a massive rearmament of the US, it was not impossible Hitler could have eventually attacked a US that was not ready for all out war. I hope this answers your question.

Japanese occupation of a few Aleutian Islands, battle of Dutch Harbor and Attu come to mind. Those battles went into 1943. My Dad was at Dutch Harbor and stationed as Coast Artillery on Attu until 4/44. Bases in Alaska were established and were a very real threat.

Hitler was working on a bomber with one way range to hit the east coast. German subs operated off the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Terror campaign only

Japanese launched balloons with bombs attached. Don't remember if any went off in populated areas or not. Do recall one being found in Oregon several years ago. Terror campaign only. They were hoping to start large forest fires.

Japanese Submarine Attacks on Curry County
in World War II

On Wednesday morning, September 9, 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-25 surfaced west of Cape Blanco and launched a small seaplane piloted by Chief Flying Officer Nobuo Fujita. Fujita flew southeast over the Oregon coast, dropping incendiary bombs on Mount Emily, 10 miles northeast of Brookings.

After Fujita's bombing run on Mount Emily, the I-25 came under attack by U.S. Army Air Corps aircraft, forcing the submarine to seek refuge on the ocean floor off Port Orford. The American attacks were unsuccessful, and Fujita was able to launch an additional bombing sortie three weeks later. Shortly after this sortie, the submarine sank the SS Camden, the SS Larry Doheny, and the Soviet (Russian) submarine L-16

The Japanese hit Pearl to send a message that they were big, bad and to stay out of their conquest of SE Asia and China, backfired just like 9/11 and we went on the attack.

...i guess you werent taught about the attacks on US ships by U-boats. Also, you have to think outside the box. in 20 yrs will we face threats from an evil dictatorship that controls the entire european landmass AND HAS DESIRES TO CONQUER the world? Yes. Did you think the Reich was planning to settle for second best once it successfully conquered europe? NO. And did you forget the germans tried to get mexico to invade us and plotted with the japanese to attack pearl harbor?
Also, threat or no, when your allies, esp the brits who are our greatest allies, are under attack, you go in and help. They would do the same for us.

And one more thing. Not all americans are like you and only care about themselves. Alot of americans believe in the old american ideal that all men deserve freedom and the pursuit of happiness, some of us belive that good people being relieved of those human rights overseas is reason enough to go over there and help them.. You I'm afraid dont fit into that category and its a shame that less and less of americans are part of that category.

U fail to remember that in WWII there were in fact U-boats off the East Coast, sinking civilian and military ships. Post war intel suggests that the Nazis were in the latter stages of R&D for a trans-atlantic bomber.

In WWI, our participation was innocent enough, as the USA took an isolationist approach, however our allies in Western Europe desperately needed our assistance, much more than the military supplies we were sending. If you had friends you would understand the concept that sometimes they need your help.

It's true in foreign policy as inter-country relationships become more moderized and global that our home countries need to be more active participants in whatever activities we are destined to partake in.

Why do you not care that innocent people have perished on our soil?

Selfish.

I was 5 when Japan attack Perl harbor and got us in the war. I Missed breakfast that morning because my Mom and Dad was listening to President Roosevelt on the AM radio. I heard his speech to Congress my self on the radio. It took us probably a year to recover our Navy, and naturally everyone was afraid and Mad as hell about the incident. So all the 16 yo boys if they looked old enough joined the services. All the women started working in the factory's to replace the men who were all in the services. We started the Manhattan Project. I was probably 9 or 10 when they tested it in New Mexico. When it proved that it worked, then Japan got benefit of it, ending the war. :)
So who knows if they could have whipped us, in the beginning everyone was afraid. It caused us to become a necular power. And a Super Power. Russia stole the Nuclear Information and became another Super Power. We won the Super Power with Russia by out producing them by our economy. Our economy is based on Business, theirs on Theft. They stole countries and made them part of the USSR. All our states want to be part of the US on their own account. :)
So the US is the world's remaining Super Power.

You are so ignorant to history this doesn't deserve a response.

However, since liberal public education failed you:

1)Hitler had already started blowing up US ships off the southeastern cost of the US and had U-boats in the Gulf of Mexico. (he would have broken Britain evantually then come for us)

2)Japan had invaded Alaska.

3)Bin Laden Killed 3500 people on 9/11. That sounds sucessful to me. Or did he need to kill 4000 in oder for it to count.

Please consult a history book.

Japan did attack us with troops over the Bering Strait! They landed in Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians and we had to go in and liberate our own soil! The landing by Japanese troops in the Aleutians happened just days before the Battle of Midway.
