We are trying to compile a list for our DJ of songs that will get everyone up on the dance floor and partying the night away.

Some modern ones too and the golden oldies.

List your top 4.

Thank you

your DJ should have a lot of songs if you've hired a professional, but if you're making a list of a few that must be played, they should be songs that YOU want to hear.

however, for my wedding we just burned a bunch of CDs and hit play. the best songs for dancing (slow or fast) were:

1 - the beatles - help
2 - the rolling stones - satisfaction
3 - barenaked ladies - if i had $1000000
4 - the electric six - dance commander

If your DJ needs YOU to compile this list, then you need to find a new DJ. this guy should be the ultimate expert in music and should know what it takes to get people on the dance floor. He should also know when to calm things down and let people dance a few slow ones. His expertise should be to read the crowd and figure out what he needs to play to keep the party moving. A bad DJ will ruin a reception.

Of course if you have some favorite songs that you absolutely want to hear, then by all means, give him a list. But you should not be writing his play list for him. That's what you're paying him to do.

A tip for the DJ. Make a list of all your attendants that will need to be introduced during your bridal party dance. If you have difficult names, make sure you write the pronunciation for that name as well. He should also have a schedule or timeline for what you've got planned for the reception (cake, first dance, bouquet, etc.). Also make sure you let him know about what you DO NOT want - not just songs you don't want to hear, but also if you've decided not to do something that might be traditional (like some people don't do a bouquet toss and garter).

Good luck!

What exactly are you paying the DJ for if you are the one who has to choose all the music. Its his job to make the selections to keep the party going. You can give him a list of suggested songs that you and your fiancee love but shouldn't need to do an entire playlist.

Usually all they need is a list of the songs you want for the major events like the cake cutting and your first dance and a list of DO NOT PLAY. For instance under no circumstances will anybody be playing boy bands like N'sync or Brittany Spears at our wedding. No Celine Dion or Whitney Houston..too overplayed. If the song requires a radio edit unless we have it on the safe list we don't want it played. Nothing like "Big Booty Hoes" or Eminem....not for a wedding. We also want to make sure we have 3 upbeat songs for every 1 sappy love song to keep the party fun. All songs have to be in English.

1. country/love song "The Dance"....george straight I belive
2. rock Pick an elvis song
3. funny rap but not offensive to grandma "Tootsie Roll"
4. Sorta blues..."Bad to the Bone"

I think for the most part you should stay away from some of the newer songs. Keep it fun and upbeat, songs that most people can sing along to. "Hot in Here" is fine for a club but I don't see your grandparents appreciating seeing the bridal party grind on each other you know?

I think its cool that you're helping your DJ - its probably a friend or something right? Thats how we are doing it too...friend running the music...played off pre-made playlists in iTunes. On our RSVP's we asked people to name their favourite song to dance to. I'll give you a few...

You shook me all night - ac/dc
The Twist - Chubby Checker
Shout - Isley Brothers
Goldigger - Kanye West
Lots of Justin Timberlake
Lots of Elvis
...and the number one requested song?????

"Could I have this dance" Anne Murray (haha. I have no idea why!) Good luck. Google "Top Wedding Reception Songs" I found lots of sites that helped out a lot.

Here are some links that might help, but if your DJ is reputable, I think you should let him do his thing. Most good DJ's know exactly what songs to play when, and that can take some of the stress of that off of you. I'm sure you have plenty of other things to plan besides the music.

Good luck!
