He's in his 40's and has never been married - though he has had serious relationships. He's very independent and active. It's as though he wants time with me when its convenient but won't go out of his way at all if it is not. We're not dating anyone else and he doesn't want to date around. I've tried to talk to him about it but still don't understand where he's at. Could this be a temporary thing or is this just the way he is?

Grateful it sounds to me like this guy is kind of treating you as an old reliable fling. When he wants to be with you he knows that you will be there for him. Sounds also as if he is calling all the shots in this relationship. A guy in his 40's should know what he wants in a relationship whether he has been burnt in the past or not. If you are happy with the way things are not preceding then let it continue for what it is. But if you are feeling unfulfilled then you need to communicate this in an open minded and mature manner with this guy. If you two are not on the same page sorry but it may be necessary to give him the travel card and go out and find someone more able to fill your needs, wants and desires in a relationship. Best of luck and hope all ends well for you.

I would be moving on,you have no happy life with him,and it sounds he only wants you when he does and not considering your feelings at all,I know you don't want to live that away and waste all that unhappy time on him,to many guys out there to treat you decent to waste any more time on him.Good Luck.
