For the US, I think it is the American Revolution, there were several other wars before the US even existed, such as the
Crusades back around 400 - 500 AD, but If I remember my history there was a war about 4700 years ago in the middle east that would be the first documented war that I can remember.

I believe it is Thuycidides "The History of the Peloponnesian War". He lived from about 460-400 B.C.
