It happend for the first time, I don't know if you need to know this..but I have a 2001 VW passat and it has 108,000mi on it..and I haven't had any problems with it at all..except when the check engine light turned on just a few minutes ago. and tomorrow I'm suppose to be taking a hour and a half drive and I don't know if it is safe to do so? any help is beneficial!

it depends on how old the car is
my mom's is pretty old and it comes on everyonce and a while but we got it checked and the car pple said there wus no problem
and some cars light comes on every once and a while just 2 make sure that the owner gets the car maintanced every so often to prevent future problems
and some times it might just be a problem
so make sure you get it checked and if there's a problem make sure you fix it

I own a 2001 VW Cabrio that I bought new. I have had my check engine light go on for the past 7 months. I had it checked by my mechanic because it is not under warranty anymore - nothing is wrong with it. It’s an electrical problem - my VW has had many of them - especially window problems.
I only have 60,000 miles on it though.

it depends in the car i have an chevy corvette 2004 and the check engine soon light ame on some time but it was just really small stuffmy car have ab code system and it give u a code say in what it wrong u just chek in the manual and it will tell u what the code means , but in my car even if a turn sign is not working the check engine light will come on 95 % of the time that the light come on it just

The check engine light is telling you there is a problem. Take the car to Auto Zone,or Advanced Auto,....They will check it for free,and tell you what it needs.Probably just needs a sensor replaced. GOOD LUCK! Rob in PA.

on my Chevy the light came on and i took it in and it was something minor the guy said that if the light stays solid its not that big of a deal but if the light is flashing then it could be major. Hope this helps

actually its the other way around, if it stays on then its a hard code..........get fixed very very soon problem
if it comes on and then goes off its a soft code and this means its not going to kill you to go a couple of days
but no matter what, get it looked at soon
