My side of the family are drinkers. Beer, wine, liquor....they all have it and drink it. It killed my Poppy. I do not think we have any alcoholics, but some that are very close. They have it at every event and sometimes complain when they cannot have it. I guess that really is a problem.

You're right about someones son, daughter, sister, brother, etc.
It can drain the life out of you. It destroys the users themselves, but it destroys those around them also; sometimes I think more so. There really isn't one good solution as to how to help the person. You always offer support and give the available help there is to that person, but that may not work. Funny, but not funny; they seem to be having a good time and totally unaware of the affect it has on others. One day, they may decide to get help themselves or end up in the hospital accidentally and accept treatment. For others, it could mean death. Some actually stop themselves; probably not too often, but. A lot say to leave the person alone; but that's almost impossible if you love that person. Addiction to anything is a hard battle to fight and win.
But, we all have to remind ourselves that it can happen to anyone and that person is a human being no matter what the outcome.

I have a few family members with problems like this. It forced me to grow up faster than I should have, and i feel like it made me different from all the other kids at school. My mom still has issues with drugs and alcohol and i basicly had to just remove her from my life because she would not change and I didnt want her to ruin my life in the process. I wish she would get it together because shes the only parent i have left and even though im 25 years old, it would be nice to have a mother and a grandmother for my daughter.

My husband also has a problem with drinking. He cant control it and uses it to ease his worry and relieve his stress, only it doesnt work like that. The only thing it does is hurt our family. So, coming from the childhood i came from, I told him i refuse to live like that again and I will NOT allow my daughter to grow up that way either. My husband and I quit drinking about a month ago and our lives have improved 10 fold!

I was married to an alcoholic. We're divorced now, but his alcoholism/absentee-ism still affects us. He doesn't see his children regularly or hold up his end of responsibilities at all.
Having married this man will affect me negatively for the rest of my life and for the rest of my childrens' lives.
The BEST thing I ever did in relation to this was to attend Alanon meetings. They really help you learn some tools that help you deal with the alcoholic/drug addict in your life. If it weren't for Alanon, I'd be completely insane.

My uncle drank and drugged hoimself to death. He died earlier in this year. He was in his early fifties and it was one of the saddest things i've ever gone thru. Everyone knew for a long time that he would die from his lifestyle, including him. He just wasn't interested in changing.
