My unit (regular, active army) is forcing attendance to an event after normal duty hours and at which alcohol will be served. I understood at one time that no event can be mandatory if alcohol is being served, and I would like to be excluded from the event because I dislike being around drunk people. I also desperately need a regulation reference to help combat this problem. Any help is appreciated because I just get the "suck it up and drive on soldier" answer from my NCO support channel and chain of command and I would really like to avoid the vindictive issues that arise from going to the Inspector General. Thanks.

So you're cool with following orders to go into harm's way with your trusty rifle, to shoot the people you're told to shoot, not shoot the ones you're told not to shoot, to sleep in the ditch you're told to sleep in, to eat whatever godawful chow you're served, and any number of other annoying things but you draw the line at attending a unit function where YOUR buddies hoist a few? Perhaps you should re-examine your career choice.

I've been sober since May 22, 1964. But, I also served until July 1, 1982. Had to go to lots of command-sponsored events, even more so after receiving a commission from the ranks. I don't like drunks either. So, during the events I amuse myself by looking at their behavior. Sort of like the monkey cage at the zoo.

There are 2 articles in the UCMJ, both point to go.

Now can someone tell me what the NCO support channel is. In my day it was grabbing a kid by the back of the pants.

most people at mandatory military events
do not dare get drunk son.
A beer or 2 will not make you really drunk.
I think you will be surprised at how well people behave.
Just go drink coke and leave after the command knows you made an appearance.
and son, try not to be too judgmental. Jesus drank wine.
and you are commanded to forgive!

You NCO support channel is correct. What kind of babies are they dealing with nowadays in the service. I've heard the old timers and active duty talk, but I refused to believe they were right. You learn something new every day.

Attendance can be mandatory, they might need your help in getting home safe. No one is going to order you to drink alcohol and socializing with your brothers in arms is important. Don't be a wet blanket.

You have to make an appearance, but you don't have to stay. Show up for a half hour or so then quietly slip out (after saying hello to your NCO of course).

Go there and have a soda. Yak it up for a while and then duck out. Gees! What a rules lawyer.

I doubt the issue is alchohol.
