if its an evening wedding definately black pants.. he should wear a jacket and if he's over dressed he can take it off - but chances are the other men will have jackets on and he'll look too casual.. opt for the blue shirt if its darker so atleast the white doesnt stand out against the other MEN in jackets

You really can't go wrong with black pants, white shirt and tie. If he does have a jacket or sport coat, you can skip the tie. If he does not have a jacket, keep the tie, if the tie becomes uncomfortable he can always loosen it at the reception. Since it is an evening wedding they tend to be a little more formal so I say keep the tie and go with black and white!

Does the invitation say anything about how to dress? If not, then go with black pants, blue shirt (long sleeve) and a nice tie. If he's not that close to whoever is getting married, then skip the jacket, especially if it's outside.

No.2 with a jacket. Because of the time, 5:30 it is an evening wedding which is expected to be more formal.

If it were a day time wedding, then sans jacket would be okay. However durinng the evening is when a jacket must be worn by the guests. If he arrives, and the rest of the guest have not worn one, then he is free to remove his. However, more than likely all will be weaing a suit jacket and he will feel out of place.

He doesn't have to wear a tie..
But khaki or black pants are perfect with either a nice collar shirt or button down

but remember..a tie doesn't have to be worn.
