Blank discs, being either CDs or DVDs, are sold for data and not actually for copying copyrighted Movie DVDs and Music CDs. The same goes for the burners.

The sales for blank media far surpasses sales in actual media but why? Blanks are great for many legal purposes such as data and creative works. When it comes right down to it cd's and dvd's are almost prohibitively expensive and the more expensive they are the more people use the blank media to circumvent legal purchase, plus there are a lot of good sites that allow you to more cheaply download legally the songs you like then in a retail store.

Technically, in the United States, it is not illegal to make a back up copy of materials you have purchased.

HOWEVER, it is currently illegal to break the copy protection in place on DVDs for the purpose of copying the movie.

Great catch 22 huh? That's our government at work. Generally, if you aren't uploading them to the net, and aren't selling them, it's irrelevant.

movies are not the only thing you can burn to DVDs. you can burn just about anything. papers you write, recordings you make, software, presentations, etc... besides, it's not illegal to backup your own DVDs. you just can't distribute them in any way.
Laws are like this for a lot of things. why is it ok to sell bongs when marijuana is illegal? they sell crack-pipes in gas stations.

Basically, they are implying that you should use them for things like storing data, making home movies, etc. -- not making illegal copies of copyrighted material. Similarly, if it's illegal to make copies of a book and sell it, why are there xerox machines? Same idea: its intended for LEGAL copying.
