Whilst I fully understand the importance of their role in society, I can't help but think that their choice of profession stems from a feeling of inadequacy. My question is...what makes an individual think that they have the right to police others, I know someone has to do it but surely you must have an enormous ego to believe you're the man for the job!

I can only answer for myself....... I joined the police because I didn't want to do a boring mundane job where I did the same thing day after day. Also the salary wasn't too bad.

As a police officer you never know what is going to happen. I like the challenge that each day brings. I love chasing and catching criminals.

I accept that the police will be criticised because we enforce laws. Contrary to what people think I was never bullied nor am I a control freak that wants to tell everyone what to do. I am only human and make mistakes.

As much as I enjoy the job I work to live and not live to work. I have a family and friends and like my own time away from work.

Personally, it's not a right I take lightly, I wanted to do this job all my life and I value it immensely . I really enjoy my job for all that it offers. I hope I help as many as I can and do my job to the best of my ability. I don't always have the time or tools and I am only human and have made mistakes.
It's an incredible job and I honestly have no feelings of inadequacy. I don't have a monster ego either. No bigger than others I've met, lol. I treat people with respect and manners until they prove I shouldn't or often can't for the safety of the public and myself..
I am given the right to Police by the Government and ultimately the people I serve and I hope I do it well. I will attempt to do this for the rest of my service.
What I will say is no one likes to be Policed or told they're wrong, including me, and I can see why people can dislike the Police.
All I ask is you dislike the office and not the individual. Treat each one you meet with respect until they give you reason not to and hopefully we'll do the same.
Just putting my side across and I could go on and on.
Others may disagree, but there you are.

I wouldn't want any police officer, where my family lives, to have that attitude, I would make sure they were moved along. Do you really want the person arriving at your burning home (yes the police will get there before the firemen are out of bed) to have the attitude "its only a job"?

The attitude I expect is "god put me here, now, to make a difference, because I can!"

#1 Profession for Alcoholism is salesman
#2 is 'unemployed' and 'student'

ARE YOU SERIOUS??

The choice to do a job such as this stems from selflessness, a desire to help society and make it better. It is the same for any service, i.e firefighting, nursing, military. (amongst others).

It is people like you that show just how sickening this society has become. Can you really imagine a country without policemen? Or nurses? Or the military or teachers or doctors or firefighters? Or any service which out of selflessness and a sense of patriotic idealism choose to devote their lives to helping, protecting and caring for everyone in this society, even sad pathetic people like you who probably don't deserve it.

I really hope that you have reason to need the police soon, then see how quickly you call them when you need them.

Has it not always been the case that if you could not get a proper job you joined the army or the police. Either one used to be a soft number with good pay and lots of perks.
It is a bit different nowadays, both are often cannon fodder.

I became a cop to make things right, being a child of the 60s. That lasted until a drunk threw up in my car. And people I served called me PIG

Most realize it is a job, but when people shy away from you, so-called friends abandon you, you don't have every Saturday night off to party, etc. You do change. Like it or not.

My mother was a police officer. It was just a job to her. Out of uniform, she was just herself. She did it to help raise her family. Once we were grown, she quit.
