While it's a lot of fun to travel while you're young enough to enjoy things, you can't always afford it. When you're an older (retired) person, you generally have a little more money at your disposal.
My parents, 74, travel a LOT. They hop into the van, throw the dog (a chow-chow) in with them, and off they go. They also go on cruises every once in a while.
They're spending my inheritance, while they still have their health. More power to them.

Don't presume that people who are retired are "too old and sick to enjoy traveling." The others gave good answers. Many retired people have worked very hard and saved very diligently to have enough money put aside to ------retire and travel. During their youth and middle age they were busy with the responsibilities of work and raising children. They have the expenses of maintaining a home, paying for the orthodondist, helping kids with college, etc. Of course some people are wealthy enough to travel when they are younger, but the majority of people must wait.

That is not completely true. Besides, you have to work for a certain number of years, before you can actually afford to travel. It just depends in the Government, if you are under the old Retirement System you only have to work until the age of 55 with 30 years. But, in the new system, you have to work until you are 65 before you can retire.
Thank God, I can retire at 55 with 30 years.

Usually people wait till they retire, because thats when at times they can afford it, or its there opportunity to just get up and go because there children are all grown up. Why not enjoy life, even if your 80 years old your still going to want to go out and live your life.
Travel is the way of LIFE, everyone travels.
