It is called a dew claw and it is up from the paw on the inside of the leg, an extra toe nail. Lots of breeders in different breeds remove the dew claw and I have never heard of complications, and Vets do it too.

Well, it's not always a corkscrew. But you are correct that tails are NOT to be docked. You can crop the ears if you want, but most well-bred Bostons have ears that don't require cropping. Tail docking is forbidden by the breed standard. Bostons are just born with very short tails, and some are born with no tail. Steer away from those with absolutely no tail as they may have spinal problems.
As for the dewclaws, it does sound cruel to just cut them off. It is normally done at the vet and is very quick. Some vets even use a little something to deaden the pain. You're talking a 2 second procedure here. Compare that to a MAJOR injury like ripping the dewclaw off when it gets hung on something during play or getting that dewclaw stuck in an eye and losing the eye. Removal of dewclaws is very quick, very little pain, and definitely for the longterm benefit of the dog.
For those cutting nails and having the dogs panic, you shouldn't be cutting deep enough to cause bleeding. If it's ever been done once, though, the dog definitely remembers! Try grinding the nails instead. It's much less traumatic for you and the dog if done properly.

A Boston terrier is born with a short tail. To have it docked is a disqualification. The dew claws are to be removed and the ears may be cropped.

the toe nails in the front you are referring to are dew claws. they are more like thumbs but are not possible. in a dog they are normally removed before the eight week mark of puppy hood. if the dog is from a reputable breeder the breeder will have these removed. The reason for removal is due to the location of the nail it doesn't wear down and eventually will curl into the dogs foot if not monitored. these are the ultimate hang nails and can inhibit a dogs walking pattern.

I love boston terriers.. we have one right now and they are an awesome dog...
on any dog they suggest removing the "dew claws" is what they are called... it doesnt serve a purpose on the dog and if they arent removed I have seen dogs get them caught on things and rip them off..ouchie.
it is better if they are removed before the pups are 6 weeks old, same with any tail or ear docking, depending on the breed

Those are dew claws. You don't have to have that done, though. In fact, most dogs don't have them removed, they just get them clipped when their other nails are clipped.

you are talking about dewclaws & they are on the back legs not the front.
if they are not loose & floppy you can leave them on. if they need to come off it is done while they are under anesthesia while getting neutered
