American has an larger over all infulence as being the largest airline in the world. American has bought out two large airlines before Reno Air and TWA. American is considered the most influencial airline in South America that is not from South America because of its Miami hub.
United does fly to more cities though.

American indeed has the largest fleet in the US. They passed United in late 1999.

United used to be bigger. However, after the acquisition of TWA, American Airlines became the biggest airline.
