Shepherd's Pie
2 lbs. ground beef
1 onion, chopped into about 1/2 inch sizes
1 packet of brown gravy mix (it can be McCormick's or cheap-o store brand, but not bullion)
1 lb. fresh or frozen peas
2-3 cups mashed potatoes made and ready to serve
Brown the ground beef in a pan. Drain off the fat. Add the gravy mix and maybe a teaspoon or 2 of water - if necessary and stir together. The gravy mix is the flavoring for the beef. Fill the bottom of the pan with the beef mixture.
Put the onions in the frying pan you used for the beef (do NOT wash the pan first), and saute. Add a teaspoon or 2 of water towards the end to keep the onions and stuff from sticking, then spread the onion in a layer on top of the beef.
Add a layer of peas, then spread a layer of mashed potatoes on top.
Bake at 350 for about half an hour to 40 minutes and serve.

The two names are used interchangably for any pie/casserole with chopped meat and a mashed potato crust. There is a tendency to use shepherd to refer to lamb, but it's only a tendency. The term cottage pie has been traced all the way back to 1791 (though it's uncertain if it referred to this type of dish). ,We will probably never know exactly why it was named that way. My guess is that it was a humble, easy to make pie. Made with leftovers and no pastry crust required. So it is easy to produce in a simple cottage.

SHEPHERDS PIE (Gods Gift)
1 c. butter, softened
6 oz. semi-sweet chocolate, melted and cooled
4 eggs
2 c. confectioners' sugar
3/4 c. peanut butter (smooth - not chunky)
1 c. heavy cream
1 baked 10 inch pie shell
Beat eggs with 3/4 cup of the butter, the melted chocolate and the sugar for 5 full minutes (until smooth and thick).
In separate bowl, beat peanut butter with remaining 1/4 cup of butter. While beating, add 1/3 cup of the cream, to make the peanut butter of spreadable consistency that will swirl into chocolate mixture. Spoon chocolate mixture into pie shell. Swirl peanut butter into chocolate mixture. Beat remaining heavy cream until thick. Spread on top of pie. Refrigerate until served.

Just make beef stew, pour in a shallow-ish pan, and spread mashed potatoes on top. Bake until the potatoes are a bit crusty, about 20 min. Easy-peasy.
