The girl at the checkout started making comments on what i was buying. first it was the crest whitening strips and she says "this destroys your enamel, i would never buy it" i replied with a smile saying "it will grow back" and she says "no it doesn't" with a frown. Anyway then came the organic butter. she says" i can't believe you are paying $9 for butter, you have too much money".
isn't her job to take the money and pack the things and give the change back, since when does the staff of a supermarket has the authority to make comments on what the customers are buying.
i ignored this incident thinking its Canadian culture. i come from England and if this happened in my hometown, the chances are she would have been in a lot of trouble. My question is that is this a one off incident or is this common in Canada?

I am a cashier in the USA, and I would NEVER do anything like that. However, I do know another girl that I work with who will occassionally comment on what people are buying or try to engage in personal conversation. I don't really think it's where you are that affects this (although maybe I'm wrong!), but who it is that's waiting on you.

No, this is not common in Canada. I live in Canada and have only ever had one grocery clerk like this, I notice she no longer works there. If this happens to you again then you should ask to speak to a manager. This behavior is rude in any country.
Please do not judge us all by one idiot, most of us are polite.

When I worked in a store the only time I would DARE comment on anything a customer was buying was if it was something I tried and liked myself, or if someone asked my opinion.

I would have made the time, and definitely would have had the inclination to get the manager involved with this nut case. Sounds like her medications need adjusting, or she needs to be given a job in the stock room.

i work on the checkouts in aust and we could get in serious trouble if someone went to my manager and said we'd make ANY comments on what they'd bought. we're supposed to just not see whats on the conveyer. making small talk is great but never when it makes the customer uncomfortable. you should have complained.

She is a save alot. She should be backing the products for sale at the store. She may be trying to get terminated, so she can get unemployment benefits.I would contact corporate on her, and let them know of her actions.

I am Canadian. I shop at Loblaws, and I have never had this happen to me, or seen such a thing.
Don't let this one experience ruin your perception of Canada.

That is what we here in California call "GHETTO"!!!
I agree...you should have at least told her to her face that her job description does not include a commentary on your purchases...and then with a straight face told her you needed a price check on extra-large condoms, a two-pack of enemas, and could she please show you where the adult -sized diapers are? =)
Or. at least told her in response to the tooth-whitening purchase, "Oh! So THAT'S why your teeth are so yellow!!"
