Depends on what kind of music you are able to play. If you can be versatile, you can make quite a lot playing at weddings and bar mitzvahs. You have to clean up, dress up, and be able to play music older people can dance to as well as current hits.
Have lots of business cards and give them to everyone you know. Send a very professional-looking letter or flyer to wedding planners in your area, along with a schedule of places you will be playing - do this EVERY month. Invite them to come by and hear you play or send their clients.
Above all, have a list of all the things you can play very well. Make a CD of your band playing and make copies and send them out as well to anyone who requests them. You could even mention that you will send one free on your business card.
Once you've been playing a lot, the word gets around. You have to have one phone number where you can always be reached. Maybe a cell phone devoted just to the band's business.
Play in competitions and battles of the bands. Offer to play free if there is an outdoor fair or festival in your town. Or even an indoor one. You just want to be heard AND seen.
Have a big party at the local community center and send invitations to everyone you know to come and dance. Make it non-alcoholic so people will be encouraged to come and bring their kids. More people will come if they can bring kids.
Or offer to play for free at a fund raiser for some worthy cause. Then send flyers to everyone you know encouraging them to come and hear you and donate to a worthy cause.

iwarp.com is another good one.Took my two sons yrs. to get established with their band.
Takes a lot of hard work and good equipment.
Start by playing at small venues, bars, high schools etc.
Get promo set up and song lists. You have to sell yourself!!!
Be prepared to play to the public and not just music you like. You have to be very versatile.
The more small venues you play, the better known you'll get.Word gets out and there's no better advertisement than word of mouth.
Good Luck to you and just keep plugging away.It won't happen overnight.Trust me.If you're really serious about this, don't give up.

I suggest using myspace, xanga, facebook etc. and try to attract a following. You could also use mini-concerts at places at which a lot of people gather. You could also get a temporary source of revenue that way. Another platform that you could use to get launch your band are to make a music video and posting them to websites like youtube, dailymotion, and metacafe etc. Then try to get them featured, if you do get them featured, you will have a fan following guaranteed.

Maybe offer to do a few free shows in places where people gather who might like your band's music.
