your guys's answers are really helpful so far. i found out tht we got her from a small farm up north. they were giving her and a few of her brothers and sisters away b/c they had bad hips. the people who owned the farm didn't want her to get injured while herding sheep.
my parents and i agreed that she must have been the smallest of the rest of the liter. we think this b/c she is terrified of men (but that could be a previous abuse issue) and b/c she doesn't know how to do things that all dogs can do. i.e. whenever she drinks water she coughs and chokes. the vet said there's nothing we can really do about tht though. just outta curiousity, does anyone elses dog choke on water? do you know how i can help her relearn to drink water or something?
sorry if i don't make any since. i just woke up...

Where did you get her? Was she adopted? A lot of times dogs come from bad homes where they have been abused, which makes them very timid. I have a Border Collie also and every time she hears fireworks she freaks out. She's runaway New Years Eve and Fourth of July (because of fireworks), but we got her back.
Border Collies are great dogs. They are very smart. Just give her lots of love and take her to a dog park.
Good Luck!

My beagle is the same way....you cannot comfort him and he tries to hide in every conceive-able place in the house. It has nothing to do with the breed...some dogs are just more susceptible to fright and are more fearful. Sometimes it is a result of trauma when they were puppies...My dog starts shaking way before the thunder and lightening starts...he must smell the difference in the ozone ....I used to love thunderstorms...not any more. I feel terrible for him...he shakes and hyperventilates terribly.

I have two Malteses and they react the same way---thunder, fireworks, buzzing insects, surround sound TV

From your description your dog was never socialized. It was never taught that the world is not something to fear. It is not too late.

Ring your vet. They would come up with something and help you sort it.
Goodluck!
