Some people will maintain that a sin is a sin, but most of us can agree that there is a kind of heirarchy of evil, that stealing bubblegum is not as bad as, say, murdering a family.

For the purposes of this question, you are free to define "sin" any way you please.

So what, in your opinion, are the five absolute worst no-no's? Is torture worse than kidnapping? Is homosexuality more justifiable than euthanasia? Is lying to a priest better or worse than lying to a nun? You tell me. I'm eager to read your opinion.

Please include your religious affiliation, if you feel comfortable doing so. Thanks in advance for your answers.

First of all I consider myself pagan

Second of all I must say that those who think lying is as bad as murder consider this, if the penalty for murder is death should the penalty for lying also be death, if so every single person on this planet should be put to death starting with the polititions

Third of all, these are my 5 top sins

1. Killing, abusing or in any way harming a child out of anger or frustration, if you can't deal with a child either seek help or don't have children

2. Using God/Religion to control and manipulate people. God doesn't want people to be forced into coming to him, if he did he would have done it himself, instead God wants people to come to him of their own free will. Neither does he want people to manipulate people using his name.

3. Following anyone blindly without question. If you believed everything you were told whether in school or in church without questioning it and later find out you were lied to would make you seem like the biggest fool imaginable and what's worse is still believing it after being proven wrong.

4. Intentially attempting to harm and control nature and her inhabitants without giving something back. How would you like it if someone harmed or tried to control you without giving you something in return.

5. Abusing the knowledge given to us and abusing the technology that comes from that knowledge. Taking technology, that is meant to help, and using it to destroy.

1. Drinking bad coffee, because life is to short to drink bad coffee.
2. Having sex with perfect strangers, because nobody is perfect and that sort of stuff will make you go blind.
3. Lying about how great your sex life is because we all know you are a pasty pimple faced computer geek living in your mothers basement only having sex with *perfect* strangers (in your dreams).
4. Donating your porn magazines to Goodwill, because they will not put them out for sale, but it leads to a lot of sex with perfect strangers in the storage room.
5. Becoming so addicted to Y!A R&S that I would bother answering this question.

Winter got the Idea of sin right but it is actually an English term. The Sin was the distance from the Bull's Eye.
However if there was scoring she would deserve a High score. She did not sin much on that answer.

The Greek word for sin is an archery term and means "missing the mark" ---there is a certain standard, and you missed it. Imagine the bull's-eye on a target. If you shot an arrow at the taret and missed the bull's-eye, you missed the mark: Sin! All sin is missing the mark, no matter how "far off the mark" you think a sin is. God is Holy and in Him is no sin. So that is why Jesus had to come and lay his life down sinless and blameless and shed his blood for the remission of sin. Now when someone accepts Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, it is no longer the sin in us God, sees, but Jesus' blood. And whenever we miss the mark as some of us do because of our flesh, we must come to Him and confess repent our sins so that we can be in fellowship with Him.

“Sin has an exclusively religious connotation, referring to any act specifically proscribed by religious doctrine.”

“Abominable is closer in tone to abhorrent and loathsome in stressing that something merits severe condemnation and hatred.” So an abomination is a sin that “merits severe condemnation and hatred.”

Proverb 6:16-19 of the Holy Bible, King James Version, states: “These six things doth the LORD hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” The seven are all sins but at the same time, are abominations to God.

Let us not commit sins which are abominable to God. Better still, let us strive not to commit any sin at all to be worthy to live with the true God in His heavenly kingdom forever.

FYI, I am a non-denomination Christian, a plain follower of Jesus Christ.

According to various scriptures the top 5 seem to be:

1. Willfull denial of the Holy Ghost (unpardonable)
2. Murdering an innocent person (not to be confused with justified homocide, executing criminals, self defence etc.)
3. Sexual misconduct (homosexuality, fornication, adultery, polygamy)
4. Crimes of anger (hate, assault, contention)
5. Crimes of greed (theft, covetousness, extortion)

In the Old Testament under the Mosaic Law there were different punishments for different crimes. There are degrees.

I'm a Christian.

I'm gonna take the question as meaning the worst sins in human eyes. In God's eyes, yes, they're all punishable by hell. By humans however, some are punished less harshly.

In order from top being worst
1. Rape
2. Torture
3. Cold-blooded murder
4. Apathy
5. Selfishness

(Just my opinion)

I think the number one worst sin is torture for the sake of torture ending in a slow painfull death done repeatedly.
the number two in my mind is the same as the above, but only being done once.
number three is mass murder ( quick and relitivly painless)
number four is purposfull disfigurment of someone ( slow and paifully again) with the intent of them suffering with it for t he rest of there life
and number five is killing a child ( not meaning abortion but a fully formed infant or child out of the womb ) for any reson
as you can see in most of those intent plays a large part. accdents happen even horrific ones but there is no intent so there is no sin
I am pagan

Well, since there is no god, there are not any sins, as such, but there certainly are greivous wrongs.

I would say they are as follows:
1. unjust cruelty or torture
2. warfare
3. deliberate lying for its own sake
4. willfull ignorance
5. wastefullness

I think torture is worse than kidnapping, but there is nothing at all wrong with being gay. In certain cases -- as with the terminally ill who express a distinct wish to die painlessly -- I think euthanasia is a good idea. It is not a good idea to lie to anyone unless it is to protect others, regardless of their occupation or rank.

I am an atheist.
