My new neighbours are also Jewish, but they are orthodox. Last night I was slightly bemused to find them banging in their mezuzah at five to midnight! Is this time significant for putting up a mezuzah???! Maybe I'm just being ignorant and don't know the rules governing this?

Your help is much appreciated.

TO CLARIFY: they were in the new house all day! That's why I wondered if midnight was significant for some reason - else why wait until then to do it? I doubt they forgot, being orthodox.

MAD MICK:

I really was surprised at your answer. I'm Jewish - so I don't appreciate your comments. Clearly you don't know any Jews, or you'd know you are talking utter rubbish!

I don't know of any requirements for a specific time. Generally, it is preferable to put a mezuzah up during the day. If they own the apartment they should actualy have done it before sunset to be completely in line with the requirements of the mitzvah- if they are only renting, they have 30 days.

More likely- they were too involved in what they were doing, unpacking and getting into a new home is an exciting time, and they didn't pay enough attention to the time, panicked, and did it just before midnight. They may have missed the first day (since it was past sunset) and wanted to get it done as soon as possible to correct the error Hey, Orthodox Jews are merely people with the standard foibles that go with that!

I don't believe the time has any significance, but I'm not an expert on mezuzot. I think they were simply unpacking all day, and perhaps they didn't want to hang mezuzot until they had finished as hanging a mezuzah means that they live there. It's also possible that they just didn't get around to it til then, or that they didn't find their mezuzot in their boxes until that time.

That actually is surprising.

While the custom is that a person should put up mezuzah's on his doorposts about a month after they move in everyone I know did it during the day.

Maybe they forgot to do it earlier, but I do not think their is a religious reason to do it.

For the record there is no significance with the time of day to put it up - only that it is done prior to going to sleep and it is also accurate there is a difference if the home is owned or if it is rented.

Good Luck!!!

They would have been unpacking things all day and got very late to midnight they probably wanted to make sure they put up their Mizuzah before they went to bed.

If they were my neighbours and started banging on ANYTHING at 5 minutes to midnight, I'd certainly have the cops on them, quick smart! Then they'd be moaning about religious intolerance and racism because they are Jews. These people are just bloody inconsiderate!

P.S. What the hell is a mezuzah????
