Somebody just told me that on his way home from work today he passed a church with the following message on the sign
"Jesus is the bridge to Heaven that will not collapse."
True, yes, but appropriate?

What part strikes me as inappropriate? Using the tragedy of a bridge collapse to get attention.
Yes it got my friend’s attention. He happens to be an atheist and he said how typical of Christians to attempt to profit off tragedy.
This is the type of thing that turns people off to Christianity. I asked the question because I wondered how many of you would think it was OK.

Two days later and the sign is still up. If it were my church, I would've complained. Loudly. I suppose the message was not offensive to the congregation of this particular church.

It's in poor taste, at the very least; the victims haven't even been laid to rest yet, for crying out loud. They could have put up almost anything else -- "pray for Minneapolis/St. Paul", for example. I often enjoy well-done turns of phrase on church signs, but this was neither clever nor appropriate. And I hope someone calls them on their poor judgment.

Christians are people too. That means that we all have differing opinions and even degrees of taste. I don't thing that anyone would say that is an immoral sign. In fact, the IRONY of that sign is this. I called my kids into the living room last night right before bed and showed them some news coverage of the bridge collapse. I said, "That's why we NEVER put faith in man! Man can only do what God lets us do."
So, IF you read that sign that it's exploiting the tragedy of that collapse to increase membership then it is absolutely tasteless and inappropriate. But maybe they were trying to use the tragedy to get people's attention, as I did with my kids. Who is going to deny that Jesus is a rock?! That He IS the firm foundation on which we stand?! We are not waffling and waivering in our belief system!
So, I would welcome the opportunity to speak to the pastor about his reasons for the sign, but I won't take the opportunity to condemn him for it. God knows his heart better than I do. If necessary, He will rebuke him.
Lord bless.

I dont get why people think its inappropriate. Its defianetely true, and the people put up the sign not because they want people to join the church; its because they love jesus and they want people to know that he is the remedy for sin, and the only way to get to heaven.
I live in California and i see messages like that all the time, and when i see those messages i support whoever put it there.
Well, im sorry i cant find a reason why that is inappropriate. I support that church =)

How long before some Uber Fallwell type gets on the TV and spouts off about how there were so many sinners on that bridge heading for abortions and gay trists that god just had to strike it down.
That sign is as innappriate as:
"god and jesus two towers of strength"

I think it all depends on the motive of the person who put it up there, and why it is there after this recent tragedy.....I'm willing to bet it was up there before the bridge disaster...but, if not, always remember: God is in control, and if it was put up after the tragedy, I'm not sure I agree with that.

Oh please! - it's perfectly appropriate.
If it had said "those who perished in 9-11 without finding Jesus are now lost" - THAT would be inappropriate. But saying that Jesus is a bridge that won't collapse - there's nothing wrong with that.
Would it be wrong to say "Jesus is the food of the spirit that will never perish"? because it makes people hungry? - No, of course not.
Now, if there was an actual bridge that collapsed nearby, then it would be INSENSITIVE - but still not really inappropriate.

insensitive probably written by a young over zelous pastor although true it is a little too inflamatory for the time being and could hurt some people more than draw them in as intended someone should go to Him humbly with love and tell him that the sign it hurtful not helpful right now and he should post I am sorry for next weeks board

I think it is absolutely horrible to make a point by using an ongoing tragedy. It's sensationalism, insensitive and disrespectful. I really don't like those advertising signs in front of churches in general.
God Bless.

It's true, yes, but it's kind of insensitive to those who don't believe or who were affected by the tragedy in Minneapolis. I have a feeling that church is going to receive numerous complaints about it.
