Was blowing cool but not cold. Bought a recharge kit from napa psi. was a lil on the low side , boosted it to acceptable psi , was chilly for a coupe of days...Then nuttin just hot air like my mother-in law , mech. said I should have had the system evacuated and recharged, says he can prolly fix it for $140 by evacuating and replacing a seal and a valve , clean orafice & evaparator ,then recharging it (may not need the $700 compressor), says we should try this 1st, whadaya think ...oh yeah any sugestions on the mother-in-law would be greatly appreciated aswell .

I own a shop, and I will cover the important question first. Your mother-in-law will always be full of hot air. You will never be good enough for her daughter, and you might as well face the facts. A good MP-3 player will work pretty good for this as long as you have some good headphones. I would get some that cover the ears totally, and this way you won't hear the garbage that falls out of her pie hole.
As for your automotive problem; you must have a leak somewhere in the system (probably an o-ring) so it needs to be pressure tested for leaks. I wouldn't do anything until I knew where the freon was going to. If the mechanic wants to try things, just make sure its not at your expense! Doctors want to try things too, but they bury their mistakes. Spending $140 on something that may not fix the problem is not good business, at least for you anyway. Ask him to find the leak, and you will decide what to do from there. If he installs a can of leak finder, and the compressor is bad, then what? You do see the point? If the compressor is good, and you need a seal, then why the valve too? Have the seal fixed, the orafice filter changed, and recharge it. This should be all you need. Oh... and it would be a good idea to make one of the cans of freon, one with oil in it, to lubricate the system.
I have some other ideas about the mother-in-law, but I probably shouldn't put that on here.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

You either have a fairly large leak or the compressor has had it. If the compressor clutch engages and the compressor runs and the hoses and pipes under the hood do not have any difference in temp to the touch, the comp. is most likely humped. If the comp. clutch does not engage at all or for very short periods of time, the system is low on refrigerant. I suspect you have a leak which needs to be fixed and then you have to do a evacuate and recharge properly. Good luck.

It could be several different things, or a combination of two or more things. Here are some possible problems...
1. The compressor might be dying.
2. The condenser (auxilary) fan might not be working.
3. The evaporator is really dirty.
4. The heater is turning on instead of the a/c, or at the same time as the a/c (faulty electronics/wiring).

That's all I can think of for now...Good luck!

first of all befor he quotes a price the problem needs diagnosed. it may be a simple problem to fix, but there is a leak in the system. the compressor may work but is still may be the source of the leak. find it and get it fixed.
and the mother in law, walk softly and carry a big stick.
