7 The crank-shaft is a device which translates rotary into linear motion and is central to much of the machinery in the modern world, not least the internal combustion engine. One of the most important mechanical inventions in the history of humankind, it was created by an ingenious Muslim engineer called al-Jazari to raise water for irrigation. His 1206 Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices shows he also invented or refined the use of valves and pistons, devised some of the first mechanical clocks driven by water and weights, and was the father of robotics. Among his 50 other inventions was the combination lock.

8 Quilting is a method of sewing or tying two layers of cloth with a layer of insulating material in between. It is not clear whether it was invented in the Muslim world or whether it was imported there from India or China. But it certainly came to the West via the Crusaders. They saw it used by Saracen warriors, who wore straw-filled quilted canvas shirts inste

who wore straw-filled quilted canvas shirts instead of armour. As well as a form of protection, it proved an effective guard against the chafing of the Crusaders' metal armour and was an effective form of insulation - so much so that it became a cottage industry back home in colder climates such as Britain and Holland.

Thank you we have been wondering why they never invented anything. This will be a big revelation to most of us who see them as living in caves. MOst pictures of Osama ben laden is living in a cave. We did know they knew how to fire a rifle.
They love to do that to. But that sounds helpful.
We appreciate their contribution to society.
But I thought my grandma invented the guilts? live and learn.

Yes The West owes a debt to Islam for its high level of civilization many centuries ago. In the European Dark Ages from roughly A.D. 800 to 1300 Islam and Muslim culture kept education and knowledge flourishing.

However, modern institutions of Islam are so versed in the 7th century culture of Arabia that it has bee unable to progress into the 20th century.

So tell me some modern inventions and innovations of Islam and Arabic culture.

For this person Monic's Comment When Someone does something bad it is Islam that gets the blame ... and if they do good it were the people not the religion ... FYI Most of the great architects were Muslims because the Emphasis on architecture instead of Painting Figures and making naked Sculptors as drawing figures is forbidden ...

And if you have seen History channels Ancient discoveries they will tell you that what muslims did that are their greatest achivements

Yes that is true but this is also true since long time Muslims forgotten their original teachings of religion and dynamism within religion so today not that much active as they were 500 years back.
Any how no one can deny contribution of Islam and Muslims in scientific advancements as well as in other fields.

The crank shaft came from the greeks, literally directly taken from greek diagrams. You do know that the conquering Muslim absconded the technology right?

Nothing al-Jazari created can be labeled anything but a continuation of technology created by greeks. He made some funny clocks, a horse drive crank and a water driven crank...non of it was new...ALL OF IT CAME FROM THE GREEKS.

al-Jazari's diagrams look like Simpson cartoons. Ever see Roman diagrams, before al-Jazari? Even greek ones, way before? They are a thosand times more professional and more innovative.

One things for sure, theres only two people to mention, in the whole of Islamic history, when it comes to technologies. al-Jazari and Al-Kharzimi. Thats it....literally.
