the purpose of the church is to teach.

so why do they think they need to go door to door to teach?

thats like forcing church on everyone.

if non-believers wanted to learn about your religion, they would go to your church... take the hint.

Its maddening. I don't know why they do it. They think their religion tells them to, but I think they're lucky that more people don't take potshots at them with a gun.

And "sorry, not interested" doesn't usually work.

1- The purpose of the Church (as you are understanding it to be... the buildings where believers congregate and hold services, etc.) is for the "communion" and edification of the believers. It's like a big support group meeting. Yes, they do teach there, but it's more than just to teach. There's a lot to be said for being with a group of people who believe the same way you do.

2- batgirl2 has it right. Only the JW's and Mormons "go door to door" UNSOLICITED!!! You do not see Baptists, Lutherans, Episcopalians, even Catholics, going door-to-door UNSOLICITED. I was once on a "Visitation Committee," but we did not go to a person's home unsolicited. We visited people who had come to our church and signed the registry, and made an indication that they wanted a visit. We then called to make an appointment so it would be both expected, convenient, and desired. So, please, don't group all the Christian denominations with the two major "offenders" of UNSOLICITED door-to-door salesmanship!

3- As I mentioned just above, our church NEVER "forced" church on anyone much less everyone.

4- And that is what MOST Christian denominations actually DO... they WAIT for YOU to attend their church, and then, when YOU express interest in being visited, they will come to your door.

So... are we straight about this Evangelism thing? Don't spread all Christians with the same JW and Mormom "jam!"

If a homeless man wanted a meal, he would go to work too - wouldn't he? The philosophy of why people do what they do can be complicated.

People don't go door to door to 'convince people' to 'come to their church. The reason is to witness: To tell people about the Savior's love for them; to address the fact that they need the Savior's love and compassion and forgiveness.

If people realize their inabilities and their need for a higher spiritual calling in their lives, the Holy Spirit will convict them and they will want to come to Jesus. If not, the person doing the witnessing will pray for them and leave. That was part of the Great Commission - to go into the world (your world - your community) and teach all nations, (teach - meaning tell them about the good news - the gospel of Jesus) sharing the love of God. If they refuse you, or don't allow you in - walk away peacefully.

I have not met one person who 'forced' church on me. I already have a church home and that's all I'd have to tell them. Most of the time, they are preaching to the "choir".

There are some who may want to cojole you into their way of thinking (if you are weak in your own faith and wavering) . Many times, people who are weak will get angry because they have been challenged and have no foundation.

I think some church's "missionaries" go door to door as an act of love. They want to share the message they know is true because there is a good chance you might not ever stumble upon their church.
If they come to your door, you can learn more in the comfort of your home.

I don't believe in God, and I don't go to church...
But I think that they go door to door to spread the word of God, which, not all people have access to. They don't force religion on anyone, I believe that most of them are actually nice and will take no for an answer if you refuse thier information.
Don't get me wrong, there are people out there that preach, but, I usually find those people at bus stops, etc.
My mother has eight children, most young, and finds it difficult to attend church, even though she would like to. The door to door people provide her with someone to talk to, and booklets to read...which is very valuble.
So, I think that these people are trying to spread the word of God to those who believe and those who don't....I don't think that they are trying to force anything on anyone.

"The purpose of the church is to teach" ....but how many atheists go to church? The point of the missionaries it to get God's word to people who wouldn't have just "stopped by" their church to talk about it.

They're not forcing church on everyone, you have the right to say "sorry, not interested".

-------------------------

Also, if you say "well, I've told them 'I'm not interested' but they keep coming back...it's because, with the LDS church, they get new missionaries every 6 weeks(or something like that). So the new missionaries just start the route over again. Going house to house, and when someone then tells them "sorry not interested" then they'll mark the house off on that church.

I am a Christian, I live in Southeast GA, and NO one from any church in my town goes door to door other than Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses.....at least I have seen none.

I don't answer the door for them.

It's called Evangelism. The concept is -- people do not know Christ. Christ is their Savior; God is their Father. By going door-to-door, Christians witness to the Truth, that Jesus is their Savior, that by knowing Him they will be saved.

Church is for people who are already believers, to support one another in prayer, worship and fellowship. Evangelism is necessary and it is something Jesus exhorted all of us to do, when He said, "Go and preach the Gospel to All nations." So, when people go door to door, they are just doing (one version) of what Jesus told them to do. Simple as that.

The Bible teaches us to go out into all the world and spread the word. If we just talk to members of our own church we are not spreading the word. That is their reasoning.

You know how it is they must spread... now if other religions and non-religion people did it, it would be like displaying hate and etc... The sick, debilitated, shy and etc should call the church to have someone to go over to their house to prevent any possible "oh I thought this was the house that wanted information about jesus" blah blah.

No, the purpose of a church is to indoctrinate. So, people go door to go to get people to come to be indoctrinated.
