I have a S&W revolver I've owned for years, but I've always wanted a Colt Python. Would love to sell my S&W and buy a the Colt. I know California gun laws are pretty strict.

Is my only course of action to sell the S&W to the dealer for a pittance, and then buy a new Colt? Can I sell the S&W to another individual through a dealer?

I want to get the most bang for my S&W (so to speak) but stay strictly within the law.

If you trade with a dealer, generally you have to fill out paper work on the new weapon.. A dealer is more likely be more reasonable then many in doing a trade.

I believe you can sell if outright but you need to check what the transfer requirements are, you may need to do so in the presence of an FFL holder and have the buyer complete the 4473 so the dealer can keep it on file to be 100 percent above board.

A dealer / Store is likely to have people cruising through, my dealer will take stuff in on consignment and charge a fee for it.

My 2 cents.

I can't provide you with any information about California gun laws, but I am comforted knowing that such fastidious attention to the legal process for obtaining firearms is the norm.

Just imagine if criminals actually broke the law. Then the gun laws would be nothing more than a database for the government to track law-abiding gun owners while doing nothing to stop crime.

where does someone turn in "high capacity" magazines?
when?
will the state "pay" for the confiscated personal property?
what about guns that become "non-operable as a result of this law?
