Because it's in their genes..... the so-called 'god gene' located in the limbic system of all our brains. That last remnant of our reptillian past were our deepest emotions reside, including our irrational belief systems. The cerebral cortex is a more recent development (say within the last 100,000). This is were our logical and rational thinking part of our brain resides and it is where we atheists have found our basis in objective reality.
Since obsolete genes do not die overnight, we'll be seeing the majority of the earth's population with a distorted worldview for some time to come.

Because wisdom only comes from one place and thats God. The majority of mankind does not acknowledge God as being God.
