Oh well, at least no one's suggested anything really dangerous yet. Well, the garlic isn't a good idea really.
Is there a particular reason you only want to use herbal treatments? If it's that you're wary of drugs, know that anything you get from a vets will be completely safe. But pet shop products - people should be afraid of these!
If you want something that actually works, just get some Frontline from a vets.
Dawn dish soap is pointless by the way. What's the point in drowning the fleas currently on an animal when new ones are just going to hope on/hatch out once the animal is dry?!?

Try adding some Brewer's Yeast with garlic to your dog's food every day. It's a powdered product sold at PetSmart and feed stores as far as I know. You could also get Brewer's Yeast and add a bit of garlic. Garlic is NOT toxic in low amounts and is in many dog treats.
I have not tried this on my own dogs but knew a guy with a Yellow Lab that swore by it. I saw his dog and did NOT see fleas on it and he didn't use anything else.
It's a good supplement for skin and coat in any case, so you wouldn't waste a cent if it didn't work good enough against fleas.

There are several natural remedies for fleas just some work on some dogs and some don't. Try bathing it Tea tree shampoo fleas hate it with a passion and it makes your pets coat to slick for them to clasp on. Also you can give your dog a brewers yeast pill everyday and this will help once it gets in his system to make the biting fleas infertile (so they don't multiple). If your dog is outside I would flour him/her. Yeah you got it just regular cooking flour fleas don't like it either. Hope this helps good luck.

The best remedy I know and use is Pennyroyal Oil. It has a strong licorice sent but it will get those fleas off. You can find the oil at a health food store and some drug stores. All you have to do is put some oil on a rag and rub them down with the oil. You can wash it off of them as needed.

I swore by cream rinse for years. I always bathed my dogs with flea shampoo and rinsed them in my cream rinse. I also kept my yard limed to keep fleas at a minimum. This year we had a litter of puppies and the sand fleas just coated the babies, not so much the adult dogs. I tried all the home-remedies I knew of because your not suppose to use chemicals on puppies under 12 weeks, but nothing seemed to work. Alcohol on a cotton ball slowed the fleas down so you could pick them off but the min. you set them on the ground they just got back on them, same as the cream rinse. My neighbor told me to use the vinegar bath as a final rinse it would not only kill the fleas but the eggs as well. Only problem is new ones are still latching on. We do have the cleanest puppies in town.

Give your dog garlic in his food (it will NOT make him stink) and add a little Apple Cider Vinegar to his water bowl a couple of tablespoons to a large bowl of water will do.
Sprinkle a little Borax on his bed (just a little). It is a soap and I have used it for over 20 years, so that's how long I have had NO fleas (and very healthy dogs!)

Johnson's do a herbal flea drop now, aswell as their standard insecticidal one. They're really quite cheap aswell and each treatment is for 3 months! Garlic tablets are good aswell. Pop along to your nearest small pet store, they should be able to help you out there!
