I was wondering what peoples opinions are on choke chain collars. I see many people use them, especially for labs. Are they for training or for dogs who tend to pull on the leash alot?
I don't use one, nor do I need to, but I was wondering what people thought about them and what their purpose was.

Okay. I can see why they would be good for training, but I can also see why people dislike them.

I think a harness works much better when trying to control a dog. Excessive use of choke collars can irritate a dogs neck and trachea. I don't think they're cruel to use for training purposes, but I wouldn't recommend using them for every day use... it puts a lot of strain on the dogs neck when it's pulled/tightened.

If used PROPERLY, by someone who knows what they are doing -- choker collars are a great tool. But only in the hands one of those people. In the hands of the ignorant and those who've got no clue, they are terrible devices. Inhumane, if you will.
Personally - I use choke chains until the dog realizes the basics of what I expect. I don't use harnesses as /I/ was trained to and how to use choke chains. I think it's a dog owner's choice, their poragative. For those that use tools such as Gentle Leaders, fantastic. But some dogs and humans work much better with choke chains.

I use one that is half regular collar and half choke chain...I don't see anything wrong with them as long as people know how to use them correctly for training. They are used to control dogs that pull on leash, this is why I use mine...I have a husky. I let him pull when we are training sledding and such, but on our normal day-day walks he uses the choke/collar...really don't need it much anymore and he knows not to pull (via the training with the collar), but there are occasions when he'd rather run than walk and I have to pull him back and reinforce that it isn't acceptable to pull sometimes.
The collar doesn't hurt the neck of the dog....really people, come on now...do you know how strong a dogs neck really is! BUT I do agree...that's why I don't use the full choke chain...the half one has the choke portion on top of his neck so when it tightens it is the nylon part that sinches on his neck...and as soon as he feels it getting even remotely tight he backs off!

I used them for my dog, who happened to be a lab. Regular collars often slipped off her head. Also with big dogs if they decide to run the choke collar stops them without pulling your arm out of the socket. It doesn't hurt them, they stop before it does. It's like a little reminder to behave. It was especially needed when she was big but still a puppy mentality. Very few dogs can resist a squirrel running or another dog.
An important safety issue is to be sure it is put on correctly. The collar should loosen the minute tension is off. If it is flipped over it will stay tight and choke even after the behavior ends. Dangerous.

Choke chains are supposed to help with training and pulling, but they really don't and are just being hurtful to the animal. I use a gentle leader on my lab (who's a bad puller). It has a band that goes over the nose and pulls the head down to the chest if the dog pulls. Since the dog hates this so much, they stop pulling, and it really works. A choke chain never helped a bit, and I could hear my dog wheezing for breath.

Choke chains can do damage to the dogs trachea.
I prefer a buckle collar or will use a prong collar if the animal really needs it. The one advantage of a choke collar is for the aggressive dog that you may need to literally strangle to keep from biting another dog or person.
Most people do not use the choke collar as a good training tool - they tend to let the dog pull and then end up teaching the dog to pull

relies upon on the region and the dogs. If the region is sturdy and the guy knows what they are doing, then this is a super training gadget. Be warned that some dogs while excited will choke themselves with it however. in my opinion i've got not used one for training. We had one dogs who could slip his collar/harness/halter no count number what we did so we went to choke chain. direction he did no longer positioned on it for all time, basically on leash.

i have one but HATE to use it. yes you use it to stop the dog from pulling off the leash it sopposdly does not hurt them. The dog gets used to using the choke collar and doesnt pull after a while because it know that it might tighten up on his/her neck.

They're recommended for training, but I hate when some people use the choke chain the whole day and not only for the training session. Personally, I don't use them.

I think they're fine. They help to teach your dog how to walk on a leash and keep it under control. Once its been choked once or twice it knows what will happen so it stops pulling ahead. Many people use a choker to train their dog and once it knows how to walk on a leash properly they stop using it quite as much.
