I was given three names, first second and surname and here lies the confusion. Most of my family and some close friends know me as my second name - though officially I go by my first name.
A lot of acquaintances/colleagues/classmates know me by my first name - though its very embarrassing when in company of a family member. It makes me feel very uncomfortable to have two names - though one of them gets my attention.
As a school kid I was actually under the second name and different surname -- this was due to family matters and to keep the outside world at bay - my parents split up shortly after my birth...so it depends on where I am, who I am dealing with and for how long anyone has known me..it is all tedious and unnecessary because I don't mind being called anything - I feel sometimes that I am correcting things that my parents got up to all those years ago. As stated..its embarrassing.

In my family, all of my siblings have names that can be used as a first name. However, one of my brothers has a middle name is my Mom's maiden name. Yet, that surname was originally a first name!
Let's face it: surnames were, for the first "wave" of surnames, originally a first name, such as "Johnson, as son of John". Next, people took surnames from the place they lived. This is still very prevalent in France, Spain, Italy, etc., in the forms of "De", "d' ", "von", et al.
After that, surnames were derived from occupations, such as "Smith", "Carter", etc.
Also, please note, that many surnames are just plain simply "first names"

Well, my middle name is both a first name and a last name. Lin is a very popular surname in China, but it's also a Chinese name.

My middle name is Christopher. Another first name, but I guess it could also be a surname.

It is...but my name is really long. Its Krystal-Danniellea Lisa Chraisa Bennett, I was named after at least five of my owns, so yeah its common. But some people...like little brother, has a surname. I like either way, but when I have kids it'll be something shorter than mine...something like Ginvera (not named after Ginny) Periwinkle or something like that.
Good question.

My middle name is a first name, Lee. I feel like last name, middle names sound classier a lot of the time.
