Actually, I like the idea, but I am not so harsh about it as you. I do not mind if those with certain offenses serve their time in the military rather than in prison. If they are a flight risk of any kind, then I would use them to search for and disarm landmines...just kidding.

Actually there are a large number of prisoners who are no flight risk and would probably serve honorably. They have 5 years in prison? 5 years in a war zone is a great alternative. (And I would pay them...however if they are not the type you would give a weapon, they are not the type I would want on beside me in a war.)

Yes to the limited use of prisoners, NO to the childish / immature use of prisoners in an unnecessary / dangerous manner !!!! O. K. , so they have made a mistake or two. HOW MANY OF YOU, WANTING THE PRISONER TO BE A GUINEA PIG, SHOULD BE IN PRISON, YOUR SELVES ??? I am not a religious nut, but:: "LET HE WHO IS FAULTLESS, CAST THE FIRST STONE"!!! Some of you might read a question I posted about 10 minuets ago, and learn about pointing fingers.
Yes, prisoners can serve a great service, yes in the military !!

Why? They are an undisciplined lot who have no comprehension of obeying laws and the rules of a civilized society. The military does not have the time to exercise any role in the employment of those prisoners. Quit watching movies that feature released prisoners exercising heroic actions in war. It's pure fiction.

In some places they can.
When I was is the Air Force about a decade ago we could check prisoners out of the federal prison and they would come and clean up around the shop.

Not such a good idea. Many would exploit the opportunity as a chance to escape.

I'd be more generous than you.
I'd give them near equal status as soldiers...and reduced sentences for good behavior where reasonable.

I'd prefer they are used for something usefull in teh states here rather then wasting time money and life overseas to die for a no cause war.
